LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - Fifteen stellar starts from left-handed pitcher MacKenzie Gore have resulted in California League All-Star honors, a trip to Cleveland, Ohio for the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game and a spot on the cover of July's edition of Baseball America. Now, baseball's top southpaw prospect will take his impressive resumé to Double-A Amarillo and see how it stands in the Texas League.
The 20-year-old Whiteville, North Carolina native, who was drafted in the 1^st round in 2017 by the San Diego Padres took the California League by Storm, putting up video game-like statistics that have only gotten better as the season has progressed. Gore posted a 7-1 record, a league-best 1.02 earned run average and 0.71 walks/hits per innings pitched along with 110 strikeouts in 79.1 unforgettable innings. The league finished batting just .137 and not to the surprise of many, his numbers still got more impressive.
Gore dropped his earned run average each month since April. And if Storm fans think they saw him at his best when he took the hill at The Diamond, he was even more dominant on the road. In eight road starts, he tallied a 0.72 ERA and 57 strikeouts through 37.1 innings.
Five of Gore's 15 starts yielded no opposing runs and in all but one and he tallied more strikeouts than innings pitched. So dominant was Gore that he never allowed more than four hits in an outing or an unearned run to score. His final start on July 2 at Rancho Cucamonga, might have been his finest. For the first time in his professional career, the Padres' top prospect went seven innings, allowing no runs and striking out nine. Gore was told after the game that he was getting the call-up to join the SodPoodles, where he will meet up with several former Storm in the Lonestar State.
In a corresponding move this morning, the Padres have promoted No. 8 prospect Xavier Edwards to Lake Elsinore. The talented 19-year-old put on an All-Star caliber first half with the Fort Wayne TinCaps (A) of the Midwest League where he batted .336 (103-for-307) with one home run, 30 runs batted in, 13 doubles and 20 stolen bases.
With the addition of Edwards, the Storm now have seven of the Top-30 Padres prospects (according to MLBPipeline.com), which include RHP Luis Patiño (#3), INF Xavier Edwards (#8), C Luis Campusano (#12), OF Jeisson Rosario (#16), INF Gabriel Arias (#20), INF Esteury Ruiz (#22) and LHP Osvaldo Hernandez (#23).
