Michael King held the Binghamton Rumble Ponies to just one run across eight innings of work and received abundant run support in a 10-3 Thunder win at NYSEG Stadium on Friday night.
King struck out six and walked just two in his eighth consecutive quality start for the Thunder (53-44). The right-hander also received the help of three double-play ground balls from his infield.
The Thunder rallied for four runs in the first inning off Binghamton (46-51) starter Harol Gonzalez. Trey Amburgey hit a two-run homer to left field to open the scoring, and Gosuke Katoh later plated two with a double just out of the reach of left fielder Kevin Taylor.
In the bottom half, the Rumble Ponies pushed back, as Levi Michael doubled and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Josh Allen, but Trenton piled on four more runs in the third. With runners on first and second, a dropped fly ball in deep center field by Michael allowed Amburgey to score to stretch the Thunder lead to 5-1. Zack Zehner delivered an RBI-single, and after a wild pitch brought Billy Fleming in from third, Devyn Bolasky plated another run with his second single of the game.
Gonzalez also allowed a towering solo home run to Fleming in the fourth, and saw another Trenton run cross the plate in the fifth on a Jorge Saez sacrifice fly for a 10-1 Thunder advantage. The fifth was Gonzalez's final inning of work, as the Binghamton right-hander surrendered a total of 13 hits.
Jhoan Urena hit a two-run homer off Thunder reliever Jordan Foley with two out in the ninth, accounting for the only other Binghamton runs of the evening.
Amburgey and Bolasky led the Thunder with three hits each. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Thunder, and clinched a season series win for Trenton over the Rumble Ponies.
Your Thunder continue the series on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. against the Rumble Ponies.
