Peterson, Whalen claim weekly honors

PEARL, MS --  Outfielder Dustin Peterson and RHP Rob Whalen have been named Mississippi Farm Bureau Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Sunday, June 19.

 
Peterson, 21, posted a .429 batting average with two doubles, a homer and nine RBI in eight games during the week. He is hitting .284 with 17 doubles, a triple, seven home runs and 42 RBI in 67 games with the Double-A Braves this season. The outfielder is hitting .340 against southpaws and was recently selected as a Southern League Mid-Season All-Star. Peterson entered the 2016 season ranked by Baseball America as the Braves No. 22 prospect. The Arizona native was acquired by the Braves as part of a six-player deal with San Diego that sent Justin Upton to the Padres in December 2014.
 
Whalen, 22, made two starting during the week and picked up one win. He surrendered only one unearned run on seven hits and five walks while striking out 12 in those two games. The right-hander is 5-4 with a 2.16 ERA in 14 starts for the M-Braves this season. Opponents are hitting .213 against Whalen. He was acquired by the Braves along with RHP John Gant from the New York Mets in exchange for Kelly Johnson, Juan Uribe and cash on July 24, 2015.
