BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Biscuits (53-47) saw an early 1-0 lead slip away in a 5-1 loss to the Birmingham Barons (53-46) on Saturday night at Regions Field. The Biscuits are once again in third place in the Double-A South—a game behind the Barons—with 19 games to play.

Jason Bilous started on the mound for the Barons, and the right-hander sat the Biscuits down in order in the top of the first inning. Miller Hogan (0-1) made his Double-A debut on the other side for the Biscuits, and the righty with the seven-pitch mix faced the minimum in the bottom of the first as well.

Cal Stevenson drew a walk to lead-off the second inning, and after a Ford Proctor strikeout and a Niko Hulsizer single, the center fielder scored on an RBI-single to left by Jim Haley to make it 1-0 Biscuits early. Hogan then proceeded to strike out the side—all swinging—in the bottom of the second.

The Barons had a runner at second and two outs in the bottom of the third when Yolbert Sanchez popped up along the first baseline. Hogan came off the mound and dropped the pop-up on the first base line, and the inning continued. Jameson Fisher then stroked an RBI-single to right to tie the game at one, and then Carlos Perez blasted a two-run double off the wall in left-center in the following at-bat to make it 3-1 Barons.

Ofreidy Gomez (5-1) came on for Bilous in the fifth and worked three scoreless innings from the fifth to the seventh to preserve the 3-1 lead for Birmingham. The Barons added a couple insurance of runs in the bottom of the seventh against Jordan Brink with another RBI-single from Fisher and an RBI-single from Xavier Fernandez to make it a 5-1 contest.

The Biscuits will go for the series split and a tie for second place when Alex Valverde (2-3) goes up against Johan Dominguez (1-0) in Sunday’s series finale at 4:00 PM CT.
