Barons Outlast Biscuits 15-10 (10)

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Biscuits (63-65/35-22) fell apart and couldn't maintain their lead as they were defeated by the Birmingham Barons (56-70/25-32),15-10, Sunday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium.

In the top of the first inning, the Barons gave Biscuits starter Sean Hunley some problems as they kept the pressure on. Hunley surrendered three-consecutive singles with the last being an RBI-single from Luis Mieses to put Birmingham on top 1-0. With two on, Hunley turned a double play to retire the side and prevent further damage.

On the other end Barons starter Norge Vera had a clean start as he retired the Biscuits easily, one-two-three.

The Biscuits threatened to even the game in the bottom of the third after Vera walked Johan Lopez, Kameron Misner, and Wisely. After Kohl Simas replaced Vera, Diego Infante connected on a two-run single to put the Biscuits ahead 2-1. In the next at-bat, first baseman Evan Edwards smashed a no-doubt three-run home run to right that improved the lead to 5-1.

In the top of the fifth, Alan Strong replaced Hunley and hit a road bump in the inning. After giving up a double to Barons second baseman JJ Muno, shortstop Moises Castillo drove Muno home with an RBI-single to shorten the gap to 5-3. With two outs Strong surrendered a ground-rule double to center fielder Yoelqui Cespedes and a two-run home run from Mieses to tie the game at five.

In the bottom of the fifth Biscuits designated hitter, Erik Ostberg tripled to left on an 0-2 count to lead off a four-run inning. Infante recorded his third RBI of the day with a single that gave the Biscuits the lead again, 6-5. Barons reliever Kaleb Roper gave up a pair of RBI-doubles from Blake Hunt and Lopez that improved the Biscuits' lead to 9-5.

Biscuits second baseman, Ronny Simon recorded his second home run of the series in the sixth inning with a solo shot to left center that made it five unanswered for the Biscuits. Montgomery stood comfortably with a 10-5 lead.

With Carlos Garcia now on the mound for the Biscuits in the seventh, Barons second baseman Muno got in scoring position with his second double of the day. Muno attempted to steal third, but a catching error by Lopez allowed Muno to steal home and make it 10-6 Biscuits.

In the eighth, the Barons continued to cut at the Biscuit lead as they continued a rally of 10 unanswered runs. Biscuits reliever Trevor Brigden entered the game and had a tough appearance. Brigden immediately gave up a double to Mieses and then an RBI-double from DJ Gladney. In the next at-bat Designated hitter Wilfred Veras smashed a two-run home run to put them within one, 10-9.

Entering the ninth still up one, Jose Lopez was on the mound to close out the game. With a runner in scoring position and one out Jose Lopez recorded a pair of balks to tie the game at 10 with a runner at third and just one out. Lopez was able to retire the side with four strikeouts as the Biscuits entered extra innings.

In the 10th inning, Chris Gau (5-2) stepped on the mound and put Barons Adam Hackenberg on base after a hit pitch. After a passed ball the bases were loaded with just one out. After a missed sliding catch by Wisely at short the Barons were able to take to lead 12-10 thanks to a two-run single by shortstop Castillo.

Still in the 10th Oscar Colas smashed a no-doubt home run to right center that went 439 feet to improve the Barons lead to 15-10. Montgomery was not able to respond and the game concluded with Theo Dinlinger retiring the Biscuits one-two-three.

The Biscuits return to action Tuesday for Trash Weekend.
