BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Biscuits (20-25) beat the Birmingham Barons (19-25) for a fourth-straight night, defeating their interstate rivals in the series finale, 7-3, on Monday night at Regions Field. The Biscuits have now won a season-high four-consecutive games and five of their last six, leapfrogging the Barons into fourth place in the North Division.
It was a bullpen day for the Butter and Blue so Roel Ramirez made his first Double-A spot start and allowed a first inning home run to baseball's number four prospect Eloy Jiménez that put Birmingham up 1-0 early.
Barons starter Ian Clarkin (3-5) held the Biscuits scoreless through the first two frames, before nine batters came to the plate in the third. Brandon Lowe tied the game at one with a RBI-single, and Brett Sullivan, who finished the series 10-for-15, added one of his own in the subsequent at-bat to put the Biscuits in front for good at 2-1. Ryan Boldt was up next, and the center fielder knocked in two with a single to finish of the four-spot inning.
Michael Russell, who recorded the Southern League's first five-hit game of the season on Sunday, collected an RBI-single in the fourth to make it 5-1 Montgomery, as reliever Matt Krook (1-1) took the reins from Ramirez and proceeded to strike out a team reliever season-high seven batters in three scoreless innings.
Trey Michalczewski pulled a couple runs back for Birmingham in the sixth with a two-run triple off Travis Ott to make it 5-3, but Boldt extended the Biscuit lead back to four with a two-run double in the seventh. Dalton Moats worked the final two scoreless innings, as Biscuits pitchers matched a season high with a combined 15 strikeouts in the victory.
The Biscuits will have an off day on Tuesday, but will then head to Chattanooga on Wednesday when J.D. Martin (2-6) will be on the hill against the Lookouts at 6:15 PM CT.
The Biscuits will continue their current 10-game road trip until they return home to Montgomery on May 29 when the Jackson Generals will be in town for Wings Fest and the Gathering of Eagles Celebration.
