BISCUITS EARN DOUBLE-A ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR HONORS
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The Montgomery Biscuits announced Wednesday that the organization has been awarded Baseball America's prestigious Bob Freitas Award for outstanding minor-league operations at the Double-A level for 2014.
The Freitas Award honors minor league clubs that demonstrate sustained excellence in the business of minor league baseball for at least five years. Winners are selected based on recommendations by Minor League Baseball staff, including President Pat O'Conner, league presidents and long-standing baseball writers. Baseball America will officially present the award to the Biscuits at the 2014 Baseball Winter Meetings in San Diego next week.
"We're ecstatic our own Montgomery Biscuits were chosen to receive this prestigious honor. The Biscuits' history over the past eleven seasons exemplifies a successful minor league baseball operation, and one that has been a catalyst for economic development for the River Region," said City of Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange.
Specifically, this past season was an unprecedented one for the Biscuits as they reached 3 million fans, four years ahead of pace. In 2014, USA Today named Montgomery, AL the "Best Historic City" in the United States and the National Civic League named Montgomery "An All American City" which included the Biscuits as a key anchor.
2014 also brought the Tampa Bay Rays to Montgomery to hold its first ever pre-season exhibition game against its Double-A affiliate. The Biscuits also introduced a new, live mascot, Miss Gravy, the Duchess of Pork, a micro-mini, pot-belly pig in collaboration with the Alabama Department of Agriculture and named by the community through a "Name the Pig" contest.
Since opening the gates in 2004, Riverwalk Stadium has been recognized nationally including being nominated for the 8th Wonder of the World and being voted the 18th best stadium in the United States for any sport at any level of play by Stadium Journal Magazine. In 2010, the Travel Channel named the Montgomery Biscuits' Chicken Biscuits with Alaga Syrup one of the "Top-5 Best Ballpark Foods" in the United States. Also, the Biscuits' home hat has been named one of the "Most Stylish Baseball Hats of All-Time" by Esquire Magazine. In 2012, NBC Sports ranked Monte the Biscuit as one of the top 10 logos.
"Having been involved in developing nine stadiums and a minor league baseball owner for over twenty years, this is the first time we have earned this award. We feel confident that we received this industry award because of our partnership with the City, the collaboration with the River Region and the unique, stadium facility that was built for us to work in," said Biscuits Owner, Sherrie Myers.
As the 2015 season approaches, the Biscuits look to continue building on their business success with the 2015 Southern League All Star Game presented by Wind Creek Hospitality coming to Montgomery, June 22-23 and the introduction of new and exciting promotions, like All New MAX Fireworks Fridays.
