Walks Doom ‘Birds in loss to FredNats

SALISBURY, MD – A bevy of walks did the Delmarva Shorebirds in on Saturday night at Perdue Stadium as they fell 18-5 to the Fredericksburg Nationals. The Shorebirds (1-1) pitching staff issued 14 total walks as the Nationals (1-1) offense cashed in the free passes for a plethora of runs.

SALISBURY, MD – A bevy of walks did the Delmarva Shorebirds in on Saturday night at Perdue Stadium as they fell 18-5 to the Fredericksburg Nationals.

The Shorebirds (1-1) pitching staff issued 14 total walks as the Nationals (1-1) offense cashed in the free passes for a plethora of runs.

The FredNats got on the board in the first inning for the second straight game, this time cashing in a Jacob Young triple with a Brady House RBI single.

In the bottom of the third, the Shorebirds rallied to take the lead. Isaac De Leon doubled home a run to tie the game before Noelberth Romero blasted a two-run homer, his first of the season, to put Delmarva ahead 3-1.

The FredNats thundered back with five runs in the fourth to take the lead back. Viandel Pena tripled home a run and then scored on the play when the relay throw to third caromed into the Shorebirds dugout. Jeremy De La Rosa drove in a run with an infield single before Brady House demolished a two-run homer, his first of the year, to make it 7-3 Fredericksburg.

Six more runs came across for the FredNats in the fifth thanks to six walks, a hit batter, a balk, a fielder’s choice, and an error.

The Nationals offense continued to pour it on, plating one in the sixth, three in the seventh, and one more in the ninth.

Davis Tavárez smacked a two-run homer in the seventh, his first of the year for the Shorebirds, to provide a bright spot down the stretch.

Riggs Threadgill (1-0) earned the win out of the bullpen for the FredNats, going 2.1 innings while allowing two runs on four hits while striking out three.

Hector López (0-1) absorbed the loss for the Shorebirds, allowing five runs on four hits and a walk.

The Shorebirds and FredNats go at it for the rubber match of the series at 2:05 p.m. on Sunday, April 10 at Perdue Stadium.
