BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Fresh off a series victory last week against Wilmington, the Brooklyn Cyclones opened up their six game set against the Aberdeen Ironbirds with a 9-2 victory at Maimonides Park. The ‘Clones notched seven runs in the first inning, tying the highest total they’ve put up in a singular frame this season.
2B Wilfredo Lara, 1B Ryan Clifford and 3B Nick Lorusso all enjoyed multi-hit games, while Lorusso collected his second three RBI game of the season.
On the bump, RHP Douglas Orellana excelled in his first start of the season. In his fifth overall appearance, the righty fell just short of qualifying for the win, tossing 4.1 shutout innings, while allowing just three hits and walking only one. RHP Jordany Ventura was outstanding in relief, hurling 3.2 scoreless frames with five strikeouts en route to picking up the win.
Brooklyn’s offense wasted no time against Aberdeen starter RHP Levi Wells. After Lara doubled and Clifford singled, LF Stanley Consuegra hit a grounder through the middle of the infield to plate the game’s first run. The very next batter, Lorusso, lasered a double to left, scoring Clifford for the game’s second run. Brooklyn grabbed its fifth straight to open the contest next - an RBI single from SS William Lugo to extend the ‘Clones lead to 3-0. From there, DH Nolan McLean walked - meaning that the first six Brooklyn batters of the game all reached base safely.

After C Drake Osborn struck out for the first out of the frame, Lugo came home to score on a wild pitch issued by Wells. Both Lugo and McLean also advanced to put two in scoring position with one away.
In his 2024 Brooklyn debut, RF Jefrey De Los Santos scorched a sac fly to deep center, making it 5-0 Brooklyn. That closed the book on Wells’ day, who lasted only 0.2 innings.
RHP Bradley Brehmer did not fare much better. The final batter to step up to the plate in the starting lineup - CF Omar De Los Santos - tattooed a ball over the left field wall for a two-run homer.

Brooklyn was not done offensively. After a few quiet frames, with two on and two outs in the sixth, Lorusso smacked a two-run triple all the way to the warning track in center. His second extra-base hit of the night pushed Brooklyn’s lead to nine.
Unfortunately for the Cyclones, they could not see the shutout all the way through, as Aberdeen did scratch across a pair in the ninth - courtesy of a sacrifice fly from C Creed Willems, and an RBI single from LF Douglas Hodo III. Still, Brooklyn now improves to 3-2 in series openers this season, and is now two games over .500 on the season at 12-10.
The Cyclones will go for consecutive victories on Wednesday night against Aberdeen. First pitch from Maimonides Park is set for 6:00 p.m. LHP Felipe De La Cruz (0-2, 3.06 ERA) is listed as Brooklyn’s probable, where he’ll oppose RHP Jackson Baumeister (0-0, 1.93 ERA).
