Cyclones, Renegades Split Sunday Doubleheader

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. (May 21, 2023) — Brooklyn’s bid for a doubleheader sweep came up a hair short. RHP Tyler Stuart posted 6.1 shutout innings en route to the Cyclones’ 6-0 victory in game one. Hudson Valley rallied twice in extra innings to capture game two in nine innings, 3 -2.

Stuart (1-0) stole the show in the lid-lifter. The 23-year-old extended his scoreless innings streak to 14.2 frames after exiting with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Stuart permitted 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 8, collecting the first win of his professional career.

Brooklyn (15-21) granted the 2022 sixth-round pick an early advantage. DH Stanley Consuegra reached to start the second on a throwing error and, with two out, 2B Chase Estep ripped a knock to left. Consuegra raced around to score from first, giving the Cyclones a 1-0 edge, as the Kentucky alum chugged into second with an RBI double.

An inning later, LF Kevin Kendall ignited a rally with a leadoff double to right. After a one-out walk and a wild pitch, Consuegra hit a sharp ground ball to third. The rocket ricocheted off the third baseman’s chest and by the time he picked the ball up, there was no play. Kendall scored, giving Brooklyn a 2-0 advantage.

In the fourth, a two-out rally propelled the ‘Clones. With the bases empty and two out, 1B Joe Suozzi coaxed a walk and 3B Mateo Gil followed by blasting the next pitch beyond the left-field wall for a two-run home run. The Newport Beach, Calif. native’s second homer of the season — and third of the year — doubled the cushion to 4-0.

CF Alex Ramírez and RF Omar De Los Santos chased in the final two tallies in the seventh thanks to a bases-loaded walk and hit-by-pitch, respectively.

After Stuart departed, RHP Jace Beck entered and finished off the shutout. The right-hander induced a line out to second and a strikeout looking to seal Brooklyn’s victory and a four-hit blanking of Hudson Valley.

RHP Chase Hampton (1-1) only yielded two earned runs but surrendered four total over 5.1 innings. The 21-year-old suffered his first career defeat in the loss.

In the finale, both teams traded zeroes until extra innings were underway.

LF Joe Suozzi broke the scoreless drought for the Cyclones in the top of the eighth. On a 2-2 pitch, the 25-year-old cracked a two-base hit over the centerfielder’s head. SS César Berbesi — the auto-runner at second to start the frame — dashed home to put Brooklyn in front, 1-0.

In the home half of the frame, Hudson Valley (23-16) drew even. RF Aldenis Sánchez began the inning at second and swiped third base with nobody out. 3B Ben Cowles subsequently carried a sacrifice fly to right to knot the game at one.

While a ground out and a balk enabled RF Omar De Los Santos to scamper home with the go-ahead run for the Cyclones in the top of the ninth, Brooklyn could not close out the win.

SS Alexander Vargas started the inning with a rocket to short, but a diving stop and throw to third could not erase the lead runner. LF Aaron Palensky followed with a worm burner to third that was not handled cleanly. The throw home to try and eliminate the tying run was just late, tying the game at two.

Following a soft line out to first, 1B Spencer Henson smacked a single up the middle. Vargas attempted to score from second with the winning run, but a perfect throw by CF Alex Ramírez resulted in an out at the dish, and the game was still even at two.

Alas, Brooklyn could not keep it tied into the 10^th inning. CF Grant Richardson smacked a 3-2 pitch into right-center field for a walk-off single providing the Renegades with a 3-2 victory.

Neither starter received a decision after their scoreless performances.

Cyclones RHP Christian Scott retired the first 12 batters he faced before departing following a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth. RHP Drew Thorpe punched out eight over 6.1 spotless frames for the ‘Gades.

RHP Carlos Gómez (2-1) permitted an unearned run on a balk but garnered his second win for Hudson Valley. RHP Wilkin Ramos (2-1) was charged with two runs (one earned) in the ninth and suffered his first defeat for Brooklyn.

Following the league-wide off day on Monday, the Cyclones will return home to open up a six-game series on Tuesday against the Winston-Salem Dash, the High-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, to Coney Island and Maimonides Park. Neither team has announced a probable starter. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
