PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (May 27, 2023) – The St. Lucie Mets won a pair of games over the Clearwater Threshers on Saturday evening at Clover Park. The Mets won the resumption of Thursday’s suspended game 9-2, then turned around and won a seven-inning game 4-3.
In the resumption of Thursday’s suspended game, the Mets came to the plate ready to go to work in the bottom of the first. Wilfredo Lara smacked a two-run homer off Alex McFarlane. It was his team-leading fifth home run of the season in just his 21st game. Kevin Villavicencio capped the inning with a RBI single to drive in Yeral Martinez, who reached on a double. The Mets led 3-0 after the first inning.
Rhylan Thomas grounded a two-out RBI single up the middle in the fourth inning for a 4-0 lead.
Mets pitcher Douglas Orellana escaped a bases loaded, no out jam in the top of the second. He cruised for most of his outing, at one point retiring eight in a row before a bunt single broke up his rhythm.
Freylin Minyety blooped a two-out, two-run single to right field in the top of the sixth to make it 4-2 game. That would be the end for Orellana, who ended up getting the win after holding the Threshers to two runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings. Orellana walked two and struck out six.
Jett Williams provided the Mets breathing room when he tagged Alex Rao for a two-out, three-run double in the bottom of the seventh to increase the Mets lead to 7-2.
Blaine McIntosh laced a RBI single and Thomas hit a sac fly in the bottom of the eighth to push the lead to 9-2.
Seven of the nine Mets batters recorded a hit. Martinez and Villavicencio had two hits apiece. Ota reached base four times on two walks, one hit-by-pitch and a double. He scored three runs.
Benito Garcia chipped in with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Brian Gursky pitched out of bases loaded jam in the ninth to end the game.
In game 2, the Mets jumped on the Threshers early again. Ota continued his big day by blasting a two-run triple off Jean Cabrera in the first inning to put the Mets up 2-0.
The Threshers got a run back against Mets starter Jordany Ventura in the second inning on a RBI single by Felix Reyes.
Clearwater tied the game 2-2 in the third inning on a RBI ground out by Gabriel Rincones, Jr.
The Mets broke the tie in the bottom of the third on a two-run double by Junior Tilien that made it 4-2.
Jordan Viars led off the sixth inning with a double off Mets reliever Jimmy Loper. A ground out moved Viars to third and a sac fly by Cole Moore made it 4-3.
Loper struck out Brian Leitch to end the eighth, then struck out three Threshers looking in the seventh to preserve the win. Loper picked up his second save.
Ventura won a second straight appearance. He limited the Threshers to two runs on two hits over 5.0 innings. Ventura walked four and struck out five.
Ota and Jacob Reimer each went 2 for 3.
The Mets (12-31) and Threshers (31-12) wrap up their series with a single nine-inning game on Sunday. First pitch from Clover Park is 12:10 p.m.
