COLUMBIA, SC – The Fireflies pitching staff was the star of the show again Friday night, as four pitchers combined for Columbia’s 10th shutout of the season in a 4-0 victory over Myrtle Beach at Pelicans Ballpark.

Fireflies starter Hunter Patteson made his Carolina League debut and he looked great in a limited time. The southpaw threw three scoreless frames while punching out two and allowing three hits before he turned things over to the bullpen.

Oscar Rayo (W, 3-0) earned the win after twirling four scoreless innings in relief, allowing only two base runners and punching out a trio of batters.

Wesley Scott and Samuel Valerio closed out the game, each spinning a scoreless inning to preserve Columbia’s 10th shutout of the season.

Columbia started the scoring with a round-tripper in the first. With Jean Ramirez on third and two outs, Brett Squires squared up on his sixth homer of the season to give Columbia a 2-0 lead before Myrtle Beach could head to the dish.

The next inning, Hayden Dunhurst singled before moving to second on a fielder’s choice and to third on a wild pitch. Back-to-back walks to Ramirez and Daniel Vazquez allowed Dunhurst to trot home and give the Fireflies a 3-0 lead early.

Columbia’s final run came home in the top of the sixth inning. Roger Leyton and Erick Pena drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Leyton advanced to third on a ground out before scoring on a wild pitch with a pair of outs to put the Fireflies in front 4-0.

Columbia kicks-off their weekend with a 6:35 pm tilt with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at Pelican Ballpark at 6:35 pm. LHP Ryan Ramsey (0-0, 0.56 ERA) takes the hill for Columbia and southpaw Drew Graw (0-0, 2.35 ERA) counters for Myrtle Beach.

The Fireflies return home to end the month with a six-game set against the Carolina Mudcats July 25-30. The homestand will have our Marvel Defenders of the Diamond Night Saturday the 29 and will include a Cayden Wallace Hero Bobblehead courtesy of SAFE Federal Credit Union July 28.
