COLUMBIA, SC – The Fireflies couldn’t take advantage of eight Charleston errors as they surrendered four runs in the top of the ninth inning in an 11-9 loss to the RiverDogs Tuesday night at Segra Park.

Luis Barroso (BS, 3; L, 3-5) allowed five of the first six Charleston (18-12) hitters to reach safely in the ninth, as the RiverDogs would score four to charge ahead. The game-winning run came in when Bobby Seymour singled to plate Carson Williams with one out.

The main culprit of Charleston’s errors was catcher Ryan Piper, who committed five errors, four throwing errors and a catcher’s interference. The eight RiverDogs errors resulted in four unearned runs scoring.

On the flip side, the Fireflies (17-13) had a season-high eight stolen bases. Jean Ramirez, Omar Hernandez and Erick Peña all had a pair of stolen bases. Hernandez had a pair of hits to stretch his season-best hitting streak to eight games.

Columbia jumped out to take the lead in the bottom of the first. Carter Jensen was able to slap a single to left to plate lead-off hitter Jean Ramirez to break the scoreless tie. Next, Enrique Valdez bounced out to second to score Darryl Collins and double the Firefleis lead.

The offensive momentum kept rolling from that point, the Fireflies tallied a pair of runs in each of the first three innings, finding themselves in front 6-3 after the first third of the game. Both teams were into their bullpen by the fourth inning, and the teams traded a single run. Columbia was in front 7-4 thanks to an Omar Hernandez single that stretched his hitting streak to a season-best eight games.

The Fireflies continue their series with the Charleston RiverDogs tomorrow at Segra Park at 7:05 pm. RHP Luinder Avila (5-7, 4.39 ERA) gets the nod for the Fireflies, while Charleston opts to throw RHP Over Galue (8-1, 4.15 ERA).
