COLUMBIA, SC – Emmanuel Reyes worked his first quality start in a losing effort, as Columbia fell 2-1 to the Charleston RiverDogs Friday night at Segra Park.

Pitching was the name of the game for the Fireflies. Emmanuel Reyes (L, 0-3) spun a career-high six frames, allowing a pair of runs in the first quality start of his career. The 19-year-old only allowed five baserunners before he handed the ball to the bullpen.

Chazz Martinez was the first reliever out of the bullpen. Martinez went two hitless innings to keep the Fireflies within one and then Ben Sears closed the game out with a 1-2-3 ninth frame.

The RiverDogs also used three pitchers tonight. Jonny Cuevas (W, 5-7) allowed just one run in five innings and through the first four innings had only thrown 32 pitches before he gave the ball to Jake Christianson (H, 3) who went through three scoreless innings. Gerlin Rosario (S, 1) closed out the game in the ninth with the tying run 90 feet away.

Charleston drove ahead again in the sixth. Jhon Diaz scorched a lead-off triple past Wilmin Candelario in right field and then came around on a sacrifice fly from the next batter Christopher Barete to give Charleston a 2-1 lead.

Columbia was able to rally in the fifth inning. Daniel Vazquez drew a lead-off walk and then moved up to third on a Lizandro Rodriguez double. Finally, Jared Dickey hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Vazquez to score and tying the game 1-1.

The RiverDogs started off the scoring in the top of the fourth inning. Xavier Isaac roped a two out double to the left field corner to get the frame started, then Colton Ledbetter found a hole on the left side of the infield to drive home Isaac with a baseknock to break the scoreless tie.

The Fireflies kick-off their weekend with a 6:05 pm tilt with the Charleston RiverDogs tomorrow night. Southpaw Oscar Rayo (3-1, 2.20 ERA) takes the ball for Columbia and Charleston counters with RHP Trevor Martin (7-5, 3.57 ERA).
