Creed Willems Socks Walk-Off Three-Run Homer As ‘Birds Best Hillcats

The walk-off win is the second in four games for the ‘Birds and the first of Willems’ career

SALISBURY, MD. – Down to their final out, the Delmarva Shorebirds got a walk-off three-run homer from Creed Willems to defeat the Lynchburg Hillcats 4-2 on Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

One night after the Shorebirds (43-74, 22-30) were dealt a loss after leading with two outs in the ninth, they returned the favor to the Hillcats (57-61, 22-30).

Lynchburg opened the game with four straight baserunners, eventually getting a walk from Jorge Burgos with the bases loaded to force home the first run of the game. Junior Sanquintin then hit into a double play which brought home a run to make it 2-0.

The Shorebirds got on the board in the sixth on a solo homer from Jud Fabian, his third of the season.

With two on and two out in the ninth, Willems stepped up for his big moment. He ripped an 0-1 pitch over the wall in right for a three-run homer, his fourth of the season, winning the game 4-2 for Delmarva.

Ryan Long (7-4) earned his fifth consecutive victory in relief for Delmarva. He fired four more shutout innings to run his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 20, allowing just three hits and no walks, striking out five.

Tyler Thornton (4-1) was tagged with the loss and blown save for Lynchburg. Thornton allowed three runs on one hit and two walks, striking out one.

The Shorebirds continue their six-game against the Hillcats at Perdue Stadium on Saturday, August 27. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
