Henríquez Drives in Two, but Renegades Rally Past Cyclones, 5-2

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. (August 28, 2026) — CF Yonatan Henríquez continued his torrid road trip, driving in two runs, collecting three hits, and reaching base four times. However, the Hudson Valley Renegades scored the game’s final five runs to defeat the Brooklyn Cyclones, 5-2, on Friday night at Heritage Financial Park.

With the loss, Brooklyn (30-27, 55-67) remains 3.5 games behind Greensboro for the final playoff spot in the South Atlantic League North Division with eight gamedays remaining in the regular season.

Scoreless through two innings, the Cyclones broke through in the third.

SS Sammy Stafura sparked the rally by smacking a double down the left-field line before 1B Ronald Hernandez worked a two-out walk. With both runners in motion on a 3-2 pitch, Henríquez stung a ball into the right-field corner for a two-run double, putting Brooklyn ahead 2-0.

However, the lead did not last, as Hudson Valley (33-25, 63-59) answered back with two of their own in the bottom of the inning.

C Eric Genther drew a one-out walk before swiping second base with two down. 1B Kyle West then powered a 2-2 pitch to the right of straightaway center field for a two-run home run. The Hedgesville, W.V. native’s 20th blast of the season knotted the score at 2-2.

The Renegades would snatch the lead for good in the fourth.

DH David McCann walked to start the frame, then advanced to second on a single by LF Dean Toigo. 2B Enmanuel Tejeda followed with a single to right, but a great throw by RF John Spikerman erased McCann at the plate, keeping the game tied.

The tie was short-lived, however. On the very next pitch, 3B Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek slapped a single through the right side of the infield to score Toigo and put Hudson Valley ahead, 3-2.

The Renegades started to pull away in the sixth.

After back-to-back two-out walks, Genther hit a broken-bat roller to the left of the pitcher's mound. By the time the ball was fielded, there was no play at first, allowing Genther to reach safely on an infield RBI single. Later in the inning, a wild pitch allowed RF Willy Montero to score, extending Hudson Valley’s advantage to 5-2.

Brooklyn had opportunities to cut into the deficit down the stretch, but could not complete the comeback.

The Cyclones put runners at first and third with two out in the seventh, but a strikeout swinging ended the threat.

In the eighth, DH Daiverson Gutiérrez singled before C Chase Meggers followed with a double, putting the tying run at the plate. Consecutive strikeouts, however, ended the rally.

Brooklyn made one final push in the ninth, loading the bases with one out after Hernandez was hit by a pitch, Henríquez singled, and Spikerman walked. RHP Andrew Landry shut the door from there, striking out the next two hitters to secure Hudson Valley’s 5-2 victory.

LHP Allen Facundo (5-3) collected the win for the Renegades, yielding two runs on six hits over 6.0 innings. The 23-year-old walked four and struck out five.

Landry emerged with one out in the eighth and recorded the final five outs for his third save. The Slidell, La. native surrendered two hits and walked one, punching out four.

RHP José Chirinos (1-7) was saddled with the loss for Brooklyn. The 21-year-old permitted three runs on six hits in 4.0 frames, walking two and striking out five.

Brooklyn will try to return to the win column on Saturday evening. LHP Daviel Hurtado (5-2, 2.14), the New York Mets’ No. 24 prospect per MLB Pipeline, is expected to make the start for the Cyclones. The Renegades are projected to counter with LHP Franyer Herrera (6-4, 4.78). First pitch from Heritage Financial Park is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. ET.
