Hernandez Hammers Five Hits, Two Homers in Career Day as Brooklyn Bests Frederick, 12-5

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Behind a career-high five hits for 1B Ronald Hernandez, the Cyclones bested the Keys on Thursday afternoon, 12-5. Hernandez clubbed a pair of home runs, drove in six RBI, scored three runs and stole a base. His performance marked the first time all season a Brooklyn batter had six RBI in a single game, and the first time it’s been accomplished in a regular season game since 2021.

The Venezuela native launched a go-ahead three-run homer in the 5th, in addition to launching a second long ball in the 8th. It’s the third multi-homer game of Hernandez’s career, as he became the first player in Cyclones history to have a five hit, two homer, six RBI game with a stolen base.
Beyond Hernandez, C Alejandro Urias, CF Aidan Smith and 3B Antonio Jimenez also notched multi-hit days against Frederick. Urias whacked three hits in his Brooklyn debut, while Smith and Jimenez each finished with two hits. Eight of nine Brooklyn batters had at least one hit in the ballgame.
RHP Joel Díaz ended his ‘26 campaign strongly, pitching better than his final line might indicate. The 22-year-old tossed 3.1 innings of two-run ball while striking out a pair. Since rejoining Brooklyn, Thursday’s game marked just the second time in six games that Díaz surrendered more than one run.
The Keys notched the game’s first run against Díaz in the 1st. With men on 2nd and 3rd and one away, 1B Yasmil Bucce laced an RBI single to plate the game’s first run.
Brooklyn took the lead in the 2nd, plating a pair of runs. With the bases loaded and one out, Urias roped a single to center, scoring two runs.
Still, Frederick would pull even in the 3rd courtesy of an RBI single from 2B Leandro Arias.
The see-saw affair continued, as Brooklyn regained the lead in the bottom of the 3rd when Hernandez grabbed his second of five hits - an RBI single to put Brooklyn in front, 3-2.
The Keys regained the lead with a three-spot in the 5th against the Brooklyn bullpen. With LHP Gregori Louis on in relief, CF Enddy Azocar pulled the Keys even with an RBI single, before Bucce tattooed a two-run homer to put Frederick in front, 5-3.
Brooklyn took the lead for good in the home 5th. With two on and one out, Hernandez launched a go-ahead three-run shot to left field, to put Brooklyn in front 6-5. After a walk and stolen base, Jimenez reached on an infield single, where Spikerman came around from 2nd to score thanks to a throwing error on the play.
After trading zeroes for a couple of frames, Brooklyn broke it open in the 8th. With a man on 2nd and one out, Smith laced an RBI single to center to extend Brooklyn’s lead to three. Then, after Smith stole 2nd, DH Trey Snyder drove home Smith with an RBI single of his own. Hernandez then launched a two-run blast, his second long ball of the game, to make it an 11-5 ballgame.
Brooklyn still wasn’t done in the inning. After a walk and stolen base, 2B Colin Houck grounded a ball up the middle for a base hit, scoring the fifth run of the frame and pushing the ‘Clones lead to 12-5, which would hold for the final. The ‘Clones sent 10 men to the plate in their last frame at the dish, before RHP Ryan Dollar tossed a scoreless 9th.
Brooklyn and Frederick return to action on Friday night at Maimonides Park. RHP José Chirinos (1-7, 4.14 ERA) takes the ball for Brooklyn. He’ll be opposed by RHP Twine Palmer (4-4, 3.91 ERA). First pitch is slated for 6:40 p.m.
