MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Southern League announced Tuesday that four Montgomery Biscuits players have been named Mid-Season Southern League All-Stars for the 2018 Southern League All-Star Game. The game will be played on Tuesday, June 19 at Regions Field in Birmingham, Alabama. Representing the Biscuits are pitchers Génesis Cabrera and Zach Lee, designated hitter Brandon Lowe, and infielder Nick Solak.
Cabrera has dominated Southern League opposition so far in 2018 in his first full season at Double-A. The 21-year-old lefty is 5-3 with a 3.24 ERA in 12 starts for the Biscuits so far this year. At the time of this release, the Dominican was leading the Southern League in innings pitched (66.2) and batting average against (.190), and was second in strikeouts (74) and ninth in ERA (3.24). Cabrera pitched arguably the best start of his career, hurling seven shutout innings, scattering five hits, no walks, and striking out a career-high 12 in a 3-0 win over the Mississippi Braves in his most recent start.
Lee, who is in his first season with the Biscuits, has also put together a fantastic season for the Butter and Blue. At the time of this release, the 26-year-old McKinney, Texas native was 6-1 with a 2.17 ERA in 11 starts for Montgomery, and was among the Southern League leaders wins (tied for second), ERA (third), and shutouts (tied for first with one). The former Los Angeles Dodger and San Diego Padre had his most memorable start of the season back on Mother's Day, when the right-hander threw the first nine-inning complete game shutout of his career in a 1-0 home win over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. The 117 pitches Lee used to do it were the most ever thrown by a Biscuit during a regular season game.
Lowe is putting together a season for the ages in his first full season at the Double-A level. After a resurgent month of May that saw the second baseman and outfielder come just one RBI shy of tying a Biscuits monthly record of 29, the Virginian is currently setting the pace atop the Southern League leaderboard with 41 RBIs. At the time of this release, the 2017 Florida State League MVP was hitting .286 with eight home runs and 41 RBIs. Lowe is also tied for the league lead in doubles (17), tied for second in extra-base hits (26), fourth in slugging percentage (.510) and total bases (98), and third in walks (32). Lowe, who has split time between second base and left filed this year was selected to the Mid-Season All-Star Team as a designated hitter.
Solak has burst onto the scene in his first full year at the Double-A level as well. The 23-year-old, who was acquired by the Rays in a February trade with the Yankees, has been a stalwart for the Biscuits in the three hole so far in 2018. At the time of this release, the Illinois native was hitting .308 (eighth-best in the Southern League) with seven home runs and 33 RBIs. He is second in the league in runs scored (38), tied for second in walks (33), fourth in the league in on-base percentage (.414), and fifth in hits (60). Solak, who has also been splitting time between second base and the outfield this season, was selected to the Mid-Season All-Star Team as an infielder.
The 2018 edition of the Southern League All-Star Game takes place on Tuesday, June 19 Regions Field in Birmingham, Alabama. Players were selected by a vote of League field managers, radio broadcasters, general managers and print media. All players on Southern League rosters as of May 31 are eligible in the voting process.
