66ers 2020 Season Officially Canceled

Minor League Baseball announced today that the 2020 baseball season has officially been canceled due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. This marks the first time a Minor League Baseball season has been canceled since its inception in 1901.

“These are unprecedented times for our country and our organization as this is the first time in our history that we’ve had a summer without Minor League Baseball played,” said Minor League Baseball President and CEO Pat O’Conner. “While this is a sad day for many, this announcement removes the uncertainty surrounding the 2020 season and allows our teams to begin planning for an exciting 2021 season of affordable family entertainment.”

On March 13th, Minor League Baseball delayed the 2020 season indefinitely, until word of its official cancellation today. “In my time working in professional baseball I could have never imagined having to speak on the topic of a cancelled season,” expressed Joe Hudson, General Manager of the Inland Empire 66ers. “It is entirely surreal and tragic that our Inland Empire community has suffered the loss of 66ers Baseball, and even more heartbreaking we lost our community gathering spot for 2020. The safety of our fans, staff, and players is, and always will be our number one priority, so we understand why this decision was made. As an organization we will continue to stand with our Inland Empire community and do what we can to serve those in need during this uncertain time.”

“The past few months have been hard-hitting for many both emotionally and economically. Through this uncertainty we will continue to make every effort to ensure that when 66ers Baseball returns it comes back stronger than ever. We continue to thank essential workers, law enforcement and health care workers serving on the front line to ensure the protection of our community,” Hudson continued. “And we kindly want to thank our corporate partners, season ticket holders, and fans all around for their patience and understanding during this time. Our organization remains extremely optimistic for the future of 66ers Baseball and Minor League Baseball as whole. As we begin to plan for the 2021 season, we thank our 66ers community for their continued support, and we look forward to welcoming them back to San Manuel Stadium for our comeback season.”

The 66ers 2020 season would have been the club’s tenth season as a Los Angeles Angels affiliate. Although baseball is out for the 2020 season, the reigning California League attendance leaders look to find creative and safe opportunities to host family friendly entertainment at the ballpark for outside events during the upcoming summer and into the fall.

“Moving forward, the 66ers organization is focused on creating new and exciting events at the ballpark for 2020,” Hudson explained, “We are looking forward to utilizing the stadium to provide some entertainment to our community within reason. Of course, following all county and state guidelines.”
