The 2020 Major League Baseball season will open with 29 former Portland Sea Dogs’ players on Opening Day rosters including nine with the Boston Red Sox. In addition to the players, numerous former Sea Dogs’ players and coaches are on big league coaching staffs for the 2020 season. 20 of the 30 Major League teams have at least one former Sea Dog player or coach as part of their team this season.
In addition to the nine former Sea Dogs on the Red Sox active roster, four former Sea Dogs are listed on the Red Sox injured list to open the season. Another 11 former Sea Dogs are part of the teams’ taxi squad for the season working out at the teams’ alternative site in Pawtucket, RI. Two former Sea Dogs’ coaches are also part of the Red Sox major league coaching staff in 2020. The Red Sox will open the 2020 season on Friday, July 24th at 7:30 PM hosting the Baltimore Orioles.
Some of the interesting stories include Daniel Bard who is back in the majors after a seven-year absence and Jordan Weems who will be making his major league debut. Weems was originally a catcher with the Sea Dogs before converting to pitching in 2016. Last season he converted 8 saves for the Sea Dogs with a 3.89 ERA
