BOWIE, Md. -- The Bowie Baysox won their fourth straight series and seventh consecutive game after a 9-4 win over the Trenton Thunder in front of 4,483 at Prince George's Stadium Saturday night.
Four hits by the first four batters of the game opened the scoring for the Baysox (29-37), who took a first-inning lead for the fourth time in five home games this week. Yusniel Díaz continued his torrid homestand by chopping an opposite-field single to right field to plate Mason McCoy, who led off with a double.
Ryan McKenna, who reached via a bunt single, trotted home one batter later, when Ademar Rifaela won a seven-pitch battle by lining a single to right field for RBI No. 30. Jesse Valentin lined a 3-1 offering from Trenton starter Trevor Stephan to right field, easily scoring Diaz and increasing the early margin to 3-0.
The Thunder (36-27) failed to score after loading the bases in the second inning, and the hosts immediately doubled their lead to 6-0 with a three-run second inning. A hit-by-pitch and a single set the table for Diaz, who grounded a two-out double down the left field line.
Preston Palmeiro and McCoy scored to give Diaz 10 RBI in the last five games. One pitch later, Rifaela drove in his second run of the game on his third triple of the week to straightaway center field.
The visitors halved the Bowie lead with a three-run fourth inning, but the Baysox answered with their third three-run frame of the night in the sixth inning. A high towering fly ball evaded the leap of left fielder Zach Zehner to put the hosts up 9-3 on the fifth home run of the year for Ryan McKenna. The center fielder's second hit of the night
The three runs in the fourth inning were the only runs allowed by Alex Wells, who earned his fourth win of the season by scattering 10 hits with one walk and three strikeouts (including his 300th career strikeout).
After the Thunder cracked the scoreboard, the lefty retired nine of the final 11 batters faced to earn his fourth straight quality start and sixth overall. Dillon Tate allowed one run over two innings against his former teammates, while Branden Kline struck out a pair in the ninth inning.
Bowie goes for their eighth straight win and a series sweep in the homestand finale at 1:35 p.m. RHP Dean Kremer (1-3, 4.76) looks for his second win in a week against Trenton RHP Adonis Rosa (3-1, 3.71).
