BILOXI, MS – The Biloxi Shuckers (50-45, 16-10) scored seven runs over the first four innings and defeated the Birmingham Barons (33-61, 8-17), 9-4, at MGM Park on Saturday night. The win was the Shuckers’ fifth straight and gives Biloxi a chance to sweep their first six-game set of 2023.

The Shuckers opened the scoring in the first off Barons’ starter Ky Bush, who was making his Chicago White Sox organizational debut after being traded from the Los Angeles Angels earlier in the week. Jackson Chourio tripled off the right field wall and Isaac Collins drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center. In the second, the Shuckers extended their lead to three with a two-run home run from Tristen Lutz.

The Barons jumped on the board with a two-run home run from Jason Matthews in the third, his first in Double-A. The Shuckers answered in the bottom half with a line-drive 400-foot home run from Wes Clarke, his 13th of the year. Lamar Sparks doubled to left later in the inning, extending the lead to 6-2. In the fourth, the Shuckers added another with a popout to short with the bases loaded. Chourio, who was at third, tagged up and came on, despite the ball being 10 feet off the back of the infield into left. His mad dash gave Biloxi a 7-2 lead.

After the two-run shot from Matthews in the third, Shuckers’ starter Tobias Myers retired the next eight batters in order, including a perfect fourth and fifth inning. In the sixth, Matthews launched his second home run of the night to left, cutting Biloxi’s lead to 7-3. Lutz took center stage for Biloxi in the seventh, tallying a multi-home run game with a two-run blast to left-center in the seventh. The 416-foot blast helped tally his fourth-career multi-home run game, and his first since 2019 with the Carolina Mudcats in High-A.

Despite an RBI double from Taylor Snyder in the eighth, the Shuckers closed the door thanks to three strikeouts in the ninth from Luis Amaya. Myers (6-3) earned the win for Biloxi while Bush (1-4) took the loss for the Barons.

The Shuckers will go for their first series sweep of the year in the finale, set for a 5:05 p.m. first pitch on Sunday. James Meeker will start for Biloxi against Tommy Sommer for Birmingham.
