BURLINGTON, VT --- The Vermont Lake Monsters scored five times in the bottom of the eighth inning to win a club-record ninth straight game with a 9-4 victory over the Westfield Starfires in Futures League action Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field.
The nine straight wins betters the previous Lake Monsters record of eight set three times (1996, 2001 and 2010) during the team’s 26 years in the New York Penn League.Vermont has also won each of its last eight home games, longest Centennial winning streak since 15 straight at end of 2000/start of 2001 season).
Vermont snapped a 4-4 tie with the five-run bottom of the eighth. They took a 5-4 lead when Jimmy Evans (Tufts) scored on a passed ball and added another run on a Anthony Stephan (Virginia) sac fly. Trinity’s M.J. Metz (2-for-3, two walks) doubled the lead with a two-run single and the final run scored on a wild pitch.
Lake Monsters had taken a 1-0 lead in the second when Justin Rubin (Virginia) scored on a fielding error of a Darren Hagan (Coppin State) single to left, but the Starfires tied the game in the third with an unearned run on a Cody Bey two-out RBI single to tie game 1-1.
Vermont scored again in the third with the bases loaded when Matt DePrey (Xavier) hit into a 6-4-3 double play, but Westfield took 4-2 advantage with three runs in the fourth including a go ahead two-run triple from Dougie DeLaCruz. Lake Monsters scored two runs on four hits, including a Tom Vesosky (Southern Maine) RBI infield single to tie the game at 4-4.
DePrey went 2-for-5 with a run scored for the Lake Monsters, while Isaiah Rhodes (Southern Miss) had two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 top of the eighth to earn the save. Starfires reliever Alek Elges allowed four runs (three earned) over 1 1/3 innings to take the loss.
Vermont (21-18) will look for its 10th straight win on Thursday when the Lake Monsters host the Pittsfield Suns starting at 7:05pm. The first 1,000 fans in attendance when the gates open at 6:00pm will receive a free Lake Monsters cap courtsey of Delta Dental.
