A’s Select LHP Koenig from Las Vegas; Option RHP Tapia to Las Vegas

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland Athletics selected left-handed pitcher Jared Koenig from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned right-handed pitcher Domingo Tapia to Las Vegas, the club announced today. To clear space on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated right-handed pitcher Gabe Klobosits for assignment.

Koenig was 4-2 with a 2.21 ERA in nine games, eight starts, with Las Vegas, including 4-0 with a 1.64 ERA and .187 opponents batting average over his final six starts. He leads the Pacific Coast League in opponents on-base percentage (.261), ranks second in ERA, tied for second in strikeouts (61), third in opponents batting average (.203), slugging percentage (.318) and OPS (.579) and tied for third in wins. The 28-year-old left-hander will be making his Major League debut after two seasons in the A’s farm system and three years in independent ball. Koenig was 22-10 with a 3.41 ERA in 49 games, 47 starts, with teams in the Pecos, American Association, Pacific Association and Frontier Leagues before signing with the A’s as a free agent on Jan. 14, 2020. He is 11-7 with a 2.94 ERA in 33 games, including 29 starts, in two seasons in the minors with Oakland.

Tapia was recalled from Las Vegas on May 29 and appeared in two games with Oakland, allowing four runs on six hits in 1.1 innings. He began the season at Triple-A Omaha in the Kansas City organization, was claimed off waivers by the A’s on April 30 and is 0-0 with a save, a 3.38 ERA and .213 opponents batting average in 13 relief appearances in the minors.

Klobosits was claimed off waivers from the Washington Nationals on April 11 and was 0-1 with a save and a 7.59 ERA in 11 relief appearances with Las Vegas. He allowed a .279 batting average, struck out 12 and walked six in 10.2 innings
