RENO, Nev. – Following a series split in the first half of a two-week road trip in Round Rock, the Reno Aces (27-30) now head to Oklahoma City to take on the Comets (34-23), the Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The six-game set will kick off on Tuesday, June 3, with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m. PST.

The Comets are coming off a successful road trip against the Las Vegas Aviators, winning four of six matchups. They currently sit in second place, just half a game behind Las Vegas. The Comets have struggled more at home, holding a 16-14 record, while posting an impressive 18-9 record on the road.

The Aces had the upper hand in 2024, winning eight of 12 matchups against the Comets. Reno’s pitching staff led the way, collectively posting a 4.19 ERA with 120 strikeouts and 56 walks in 105 1/3 innings.

Tommy Henry and Cristian Mena, both recently called up to the major leagues, were crucial to Reno’s success against the Comets last season. Henry collected two wins in two starts, posting a 2.38 ERA with 16 strikeouts and seven walks in 11 1/3 innings, including a dominant nine-strikeout performance in late June where he allowed two runs in six frames. Mena was efficient as well, registering a 3.60 ERA with 17 strikeouts and four walks in 10 innings. He matched Henry’s nine strikeouts in May against OKC with a five-inning shutout.

Notable players on the Comets’ current roster include INF Alex Freeland and OF Ryan Ward.

Freeland, the Dodgers’ #4 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline, has been a threat at the plate this season. The switch-hitting shortstop is hitting .283/.382/.452 with 19 doubles (2nd in the PCL), six home runs, 44 RBI, and 36 walks in 55 games. He has been consistent all season and is considered one of the best players in the Pacific Coast League. The 23-year-old has been red hot recently, going 13-for-37 (.351) with two doubles, three home runs, and 12 RBI over his last eight games, including five multi-hit performances. Reno must contain Freeland at the plate to leave Oklahoma City with a series win.

Ward, a former eighth-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, has been one of the PCL’s best pure hitters this season. The 27-year-old ranks in the top five in almost every counting stat in the league, leading the PCL in hits (69) and tying for third in home runs (13). For the season, he is hitting a team-best .325/.405/.590 with 29 extra-base hits, 42 RBI, and 29 walks. Ward has been mashing lately, going 13-for-30 (.433) with five doubles, four home runs, and 10 RBI over his last seven games. He recently posted one of the best offensive performances of the season on May 29 against Las Vegas, going 5-for-5 with three home runs and six RBI, leading the Comets to a 9-3 win. Ward is a serious threat to the Aces’ success, and they must slow him down in the upcoming series.

Tristin English enjoyed a fantastic series last week against the Round Rock Express, going 8-for-24 (.333) with four doubles and six RBI in the series split. The Georgia Tech product recently came off the injured list and has been a monster at the plate since, collecting 13 hits in 36 at-bats with five doubles, one home run, and eight RBI. Reno’s fan favorite will look to continue his hot hitting in the upcoming series against the Comets.

After the series in Oklahoma City, the Aces will return to Greater Nevada Field to host the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, the Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros. The six-game series will begin on Tuesday, June 10, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. PST.
