Aldrete, Matheny power Squirrels to win in Bowie
BOWIE, Md. – Behind an early offensive outburst, the Richmond Flying Squirrels beat the Bowie Baysox, 10-6, on Sunday afternoon at Prince George’s Stadium. The Flying Squirrels (28-35) picked up eight walks and four extra-base hits in the victory over the Baysox (27-35).

After back-to-back walks from Bowie starter Carlos Tavera (Loss, 1-4) in the first, Carter Aldrete crushed a three-run homer to left field to give Richmond an early three-run lead. It was Aldrete’s ninth home run of the season and his third of the week against Bowie.

Later in the first inning, Jimmy Glowenke was caught in a rundown between first and second base, allowing Brandon Martorano to break home and score on a stolen base, extending the lead to 4-0.
Hayden Cantrelle extended the advantage to 5-0 in the top of the third with an RBI single. Cantrelle collected a season-high four hits in the game and reached base in all five plate appearances.
With runners at the corners in the fourth, Bowie reliever Houston Roth tossed a wild pitch, scoring Marco Luciano from third base and moved the score to 6-0.
Bowie broke the shutout in the bottom of the fourth when TT Bowens reached on a fielding error and sent John Rhodes home to make it a 6-1 ballgame. Reliever Nick Zwack (Win, 3-4) held the Baysox scoreless through the rest of his day, totaling four innings with five strikeouts.

The Flying Squirrels racked up three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 9-1 lead. Shane Matheny started the scoring with a two-RBI double to center field and later scored off a Bowie fielding error.
Bowie gathered four runs in the bottom of the eighth to close the deficit to 9-5. Cesar Prieto scored from third base off a fielding error and Ramon Rodriguez rocketed a three-run homer to center field to cut Richmond’s lead to four runs.
Matheny rocketed an RBI double to score Cantrelle from second base in the top of the ninth and pushed the Flying Squirrels advantage to 10-5. Matheny finished the afternoon 3-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs.
In the bottom of the ninth, Billy Cook drew a bases loaded walk to move the score to 10-6. Blake Rivera responded with two strikeouts to end the game.
In his first start of the season, Wil Jensen pitched two scoreless innings, working around three hits and one walk allowed.
The Flying Squirrels are off Monday but will start up a six-game series against the Harrisburg Senators, Double-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, on Tuesday. Right-hander Mason Black (0-4, 4.84) will start for Richmond opposed by Harrisburg left-hander Alex Troop (3-2, 5.40).
On Tuesday, the team celebrates one of Richmond’s most iconic neighborhoods with The Fan Community Night and the first 1,000 fans ages 15 and older will go home with a folding fan presented by Richmond Virginia Orthodontics.
