Alex Binelas Named Low-A East Player of the Week

ZEBULON - The Carolina Mudcats, in conjunction with Minor League Baseball, are thrilled to announce that infielder Alex Binelas has been named the Low-A East Player of the Week for the week ending on September 12. Binelas finished his award-winning week with league highs in hits, extra-base hits and total bases. He was also third in Low-A East in OPS, third in slugging, ninth in on-base percentage and sixth in average during the last week of games.

In all, Binelas went 11-for-24 and hit .458/.500/.917 with a 1.417 OPS over six games during the week of games running from September 6 through September 12. Binelas also totaled seven runs, two doubles, three home runs, six RBI and 22 total bases while becoming the seventh Mudcats player to earn a weekly Low-A East league award this season.

Binelas, 21, began the week going 1-for-4 with a run scored in a series opening home loss to the Down East Wood Ducks at Five County Stadium on Tuesday, September 7. He then totaled his first of two four-hit games during the last week of play the following night while going 4-for-5 with a run, a double, a home run and two RBI on Wednesday, September 8.

Binelas then put together a career night on Saturday, September 11 while going 4-for-5 with three runs, two home runs and four RBI. His runs, homers and RBI that night were all career highs for Binelas, and all played a big part in Carolina’s 14-10 victory versus the Wood Ducks in Zebulon. He then finished his award-winning week going 1-for-4 with a run on September 12 at Five County Stadium.

Binelas, a native of Oak Creek, Wisc., was selected by the Brewers in the third round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Louisville. After signing, Binelas was first assigned to the Brewers Gold of the Arizona Complex League where he would hit .286/.444/.286 over seven games before joining the Mudcats. Since his assignment to Carolina, Binelas has hit .348/.413/.652 (32-for-92) while totaling a 1.066 OPS with 10 doubles, six home runs and 22 RBI over 23 games with the Mudcats.

The Mudcats have now earned a total of nine Low-A East player or pitcher weekly awards this season with Binelas’ Player of the Week award being the most recent. Pitcher Justin Bullock was the first Carolina player to earn the weekly award this season as he was the Low-A East Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 10 through May 16. Former Carolina outfielder Joe Gray Jr. earned back-to-back Player of the Week awards for the weeks of May 24 through May 30, and May 31 through June 6. Former Mudcats infielder Felix Valerio also earned two Player of the Week awards with his occurring for the weeks of June 7 through June 13, and August 9 through August 15. Pitcher Brendan Murphy was also named the Low-A East Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 12 through July 18. Former Mudcats outfielder Joey Wiemer additionally earned the Player of the Week award for the week of August 2 through August 8. Zach Mort was named Low-A East Pitcher of the Week for the week of August 16 through August 22.
