Altoona, PA (August 1, 2026) – The Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, began the month of August with a chaotic, come-from-behind thriller over the Altoona Curve, the Double-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, by a 9-8 final on Saturday night.

Chesapeake (18-13, 47-52) fell behind for the first time in the contest in the bottom of the eighth inning, before scoring two in the top of the ninth to rally and win. Wehiwa Aloy helped lead the charge, as the Orioles No. 4 prospect, via MLB.com, had his first standout performance in his debut week at Double-A. Aloy tallied four hits on Saturday night – his third four-hit game of the season at all levels. Designated hitter Victor Figueroa drove in five of the nine Baysox runs, including the game’s tying run in the ninth.

Aloy’s double in the top of the ninth inning helped set the table for Chesapeake. Following a walk to Thomas Sosa, Aloy skied a ball down the right field line that just eluded the glove of Altoona right-fielder Ivan Brethowr. The ball touched down fair, before bouncing out of play on the right side for an automatic double. With runners at third and second with no one out, Altoona played the right side of its infield back. Figueroa chopped a ball to first base to score Sosa and tie the game. The next batter, Griff O’Ferrall, lifted a fly ball to right field for a go-ahead sacrifice fly that brought home Aloy to make it 9-8.

Saturday night marked the third come from behind win in the ninth inning for the Baysox this season.

Aloy’s first hit of the night – an opposite field double in the first inning – set the stage for Figueroa to open the scoring. Aloy’s double followed a Sosa single and put runners at second and third. Against a drawn-in Curve infield, Figueroa dribbled a ball past Callan Moss at first base for a two-run single. Figueroa would plate the first four Baysox runs on Saturday, as the slugger laced a two-run, opposite-field homer in the second after Sosa’s second single of the night. The long ball was the first for Figueroa at Double-A and his 23rd overall on the season – more than any other Orioles minor leaguer. An Anderson De Los Santos RBI single made it a three-run third for Chesapeake and established a 5-1 lead.

Figueroa is 7-for-20 with three extra-base hits and seven RBI in his first five Double-A contests. His 82 total RBI on the campaign also lead the Baltimore farm.

On the mound, right-handed starter Pat Reilly fanned seven in the opening three innings of one-run ball. The lone blemish early for Reilly was a leadoff inside-the-park homer from the Curve’s Will Taylor. Taylor’s line drive to the deepest part of left-center was just out of the reach of a diving Doug Hodo and bounced all the way to the wall.

In the fourth, the Curve struck for three runs on four hits. Two singles led to a two-run double from Brethowr, who was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple. The next pitch was a solo homer from the Curve’s Javier Rivas to make the score 5-4.

The Baysox got a run back in the top of the fifth. Frederick Bencosme notched one of his two base hits of the night, before advancing to second on a wild pitch. On a delayed steal of third, an Altoona throwing error allowed Bencosme to score and make it a 6-4 game. In the bottom half of the frame, the Curve tied the game on a double, hit by pitch, and eventual two-run single from Titus Dimitru. Reilly went four-plus frames with eight strikeouts on Saturday in his second start off the Chesapeake injured list.

Aloy tallied his first RBI on a double to left-center field in the sixth inning. The Baysox lead was quickly canceled out as Altoona loaded the bases in the bottom half and re-tied the game on a broken-bat infield hit from Murf Gray. Chesapeake turned one of two double plays on the night to limit the damage to just one run.

The Curve finally took the lead in the bottom of the eighth, Taylor doubled with one out and scored on a Lonnie White Jr. triple to make it 8-7 Altoona. Aloy smothered a hard-hit ground ball down the third base line to rob Gray of a hit and prevent an additional run from the Curve. Right-hander Joe Glassey then entered to pick up a strikeout and end the frame.

Altoona right-hander Jake Shirk (L, 3-3) blew the save opportunity in the top of the ninth when Chesapeake took the lead for good.

After the top of the ninth inning heroics from the Baysox, the Curve led off the bottom half of the frame with a pair of singles. However, Glassey (W, 1-0) picked up a strikeout and a ground ball for a game-ending double play, as Chesapeake hung on for the win.

The Baysox go for a series win in Altoona on Sunday night. Right-hander Evan Yates (4-6, 5.40 ERA) is set start for Chesapeake against left-hander Connor Oliver (2-3, 5.54 ERA). First pitch scheduled for 6:00 pm ET from Peoples Natural Gas Field.

The Baysox return home on Tuesday, August 4, when they open up a seven-game set with the Harrisburg Senators, the Double-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 6:35 pm ET.
