August Ends On Wrong End Of Doubleheader Sweep

VANCOUVER, BC – The Canadians couldn’t capture their usual doubleheader mojo as they found themselves on the wrong end of a twin bill sweep against the Hillsboro Hops [D-Backs] Thursday evening at Rogers Field at Nat Bailey Stadium.
Game 1 – Hops 2, C’s 0
A pair of two-out unearned runs in the top of the fourth was the difference in game one. Canadians starter Devereaux Harrison (L, 5-5) issued a one-out walk – his only of the game – then struck the next batter out before a 3-2 pitch to Kevin Graham was hit on the ground to third. The cue ball was kicked into left field to put runners at the corners and Gavin Conticello cashed in with a two-RBI double that broke the scoreless tie and proved to be the game-winning hit.
Vancouver had their chances. The C’s had two on and nobody out in the second but failed to score, loaded the bases with two away in the fifth and came up empty then had second and third with two down in the sixth but stranded both runners.
After Harrison’s departure in the fifth, Cooper Benson worked 2.1 scoreless stanzas of relief. On offense, Gabby Martinez paced the bats with two hits while Josh Kasevich and Estiven Machado reached twice.
Game 2 – Hops 5, C’s 4
Another Canadians error proved crucial in the second game. Trailing 4-3 after giving up four in the top of the third on the heels of Glenn Santiago’s two-out, three-RBI double in the bottom of the second, the C’s gave up a one-out double to Gavin Logan. An error at third followed to put runners at the corners but a strikeout had Vancouver one out away from escaping the inning. Tommy Troy laced the next pitch up the middle to score an unearned run and make it 5-3 Hops.
A solo shot from Cade Doughty in the fifth brought the C’s within in a run, but that was as close as they’d get in a 5-4 loss.
The Canadians now trail the Hops 2-1 in the six-game series. They won’t have to wait long to try and bounce back; game four of the set is slated for Friday at 1:05 p.m. as part of the final Fortis BC ‘Nooner at The Nat of the season.
