METAIRIE, LA - Tyler Pill, Patrick Wisdom and Matt Davidson hit consecutive ninth-inning homers in a span of five pitches on Friday night, and the Nashville Sounds stunned the New Orleans Baby Cakes, 6-5, at the Shrine on Airline. The win snapped the Sounds' losing streak at four, and it marked the first time since July 4, 2015, they hit back-to-back-to-back home runs.
The homers came off former Sound R.J. Alvarez and turned a 5-3 deficit into a 6-5 lead. Pill's homer was his first as a Sound and led off the ninth. Then Wisdom crushed the first pitch he saw over the left field wall to tie the game at 5-5. Davidson, who had entered the game as pinch-hitter in the seventh, drilled a 1-1 pitch an estimated 449 feet to give the Sounds a 6-5 lead. That became the final after David Carpenter logged a perfect bottom of the ninth to notch his ninth save.
The Sounds, who had not led at any point during the previous four games, had taken a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Andy Ibáñez singled home Carlos Tocci, and Pill delivered a sacrifice fly off Joe Gunkel. But New Orleans scored once in the first and added an unearned run off starter Wes Benjamin in the second to make it 2-2. That tie stayed until the sixth inning when Lewis Brinson smacked a three-run homer to center off Benjamin to put the Cakes ahead 5-2. Tocci got the Sounds closer in the eighth with a solo homer, setting the stage for the ninth-inning rally. Reed Garrett and Miguel Del Pozo combined for 2 1/3 scoreless relief innings, and Del Pozo got the win.
The five-game series continues Saturday night at 6:00 CT. Pedro Payano (0-2, 5.02) will pitch for the Sounds against Ben Meyer (3-4, 6.71).
