Beloit, WI – Cedar Rapids first baseman Aaron Sabato launched a go-ahead solo shot in the eighth inning to fuel a 4-2 Kernels win over the Beloit Sky Carp on Friday evening, their fifth-straight win. Sean Mooney struck out nine over 5.0 innings of two-run ball while Miguel Rodriguez and Bobby Milacki extended the bullpen’s scoreless streak to 18.0 innings in the series. The Kernels are now 53-32 – tied for their best mark of the season – and 11-9 in the second half.

Seth Gray blasted a two-run double off the wall in left-center to open the scoring in the first, plating Alerick Soularie and Sabato.

Mooney shook off a rocky first in which he allowed two runs on three hits, going on to fire 5.0 innings of three-hit ball with nine punchouts. The righthander walked none and threw 50 strikes on 71 pitches with 14 whiffs.

Both starters settled in to put up zeros before giving way to the bullpen in the sixth. Rodriguez struck out the side in the sixth for Cedar Rapids, punching out four total over his 2.0 perfect innings of work.

Sabato smashed a solo shot out to left-center with one out in the eighth, putting the Kernels up 3-2. Milacki induced a double-play grounder to hold the lead in the home half. Jeferson Morales doubled to lead off the ninth, stole third and scored on a Will Holland groundout to add insurance.

Milacki fired a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his second save of the season with Rodriguez picking up his second win.

Game five of the series is set for Saturday evening at 6:35 p.m. CT in Beloit.
