Baysox Fall To Curve On Friday Night in Altoona

Altoona, PA (July 31, 2026) – The Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, fell to the Altoona Curve, the Double-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, by a 4-1 final on Friday night.

Left-hander Joseph Dzierwa enjoyed another stellar Baysox start on Friday. The Orioles top ranked pitching prospect allowed just one, unearned run in his five frames of work on a second inning error. After Altoona led off the frame with a single and an error, a deep fly ball out allowed both runners to advance. An errant back pick attempt from catcher Adam Retzbach got loose into left field, allowing the game’s opening run to score. Dzierwa calmed the waters and escaped the second with a strikeout and groundout. From there, he allowed just one base hit the rest of the way, fanning five and walking just one through his five innings. Dzierwa lowered his season ERA with the Baysox to 2.28.

Chesapeake (17-13, 46-52) was held off the board until the sixth inning on Friday. After back-to-back knocks from Thomas Sosa and Griff O’Ferrall started the frame, Frederick Bencosme sacrificed both runners up 90 feet. Anderson De Los Santos followed with an RBI single to tie the game at one. An attempted squeeze play from Retzbach ended with a close play at the plate where O’Ferrall tried to score the go-ahead run. Right-hander Matt Ager (W, 5-2) finished the sixth for Altoona in the start on Friday, scattering eight hits and allowing the lone tally.

The Curve went ahead for good in the bottom of the sixth. Two singles and a hit batter from Baysox right-hander Gerald Ogando loaded the bases with one out. A broken-bat ground ball from Altoona’s Callan Moss brought a run home without an out being recorded Ogando (L, 1-1) would plunk his second batter of the inning to force in another run, before falling behind the next batter and being lifted in the middle of the plate appearance. An eventual bases-loaded walk forced home the third and final run of the inning and his line.

Chesapeake was held off the board in the final three frames, with Altoona’s Jaycob Deese (S, 2) working a perfect ninth.

Aron Estrada doubled twice for Chesapeake on Friday night, ending the month of July on an eight-game hitting streak. Estrada hit .341 this month with a .883 OPS. O’Ferrall’s 2-for-4 effort on Friday was his eighth-straight game with a hit and his fifth-consecutive game with multiple knocks.

Chesapeake looks to get back in the win column when it continues its six-game series in Altoona on Saturday night. Right-hander Pat Reilly AA: 0-1, 5.06 ERA) is set start for the Baysox against Curve right-hander Kyle Robinson (AA: 1-1, 5.00 ERA). First pitch scheduled for 6:30 pm ET from Peoples Natural Gas Field.

The Baysox return home on Tuesday, August 4, when they open up a seven-game set with the Harrisburg Senators, the Double-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 6:35 pm ET.
