Baysox Walked Off By Curve on Sunday Night

Altoona, PA (August 2, 2026) – The Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, were walked off by the Altoona Curve, the Double-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, by a 4-3 final on Sunday night.

In a pitcher’s duel through the opening five innings, right-handed starter Evan Yates tossed the deepest outing of his professional career for the Baysox. Yates went six and two-thirds innings on Sunday, not allowing the run through his opening five frames. He stranded a pair of runners in both the second and fourth frames. In the second, a hit by pitch and single, followed by a wild pitch put runners at second and third before Yates retired the next three hitters consecutively without allowing a run to score. In the fourth, Brandon Butterworth backed his pitcher by throwing out a runner at the plate on a grounder to second, before Yates wiggled out of yet another jam.

The Curve eventually broke through in the sixth. A hit by pitch and single were plated on a two-out, two-run single from Altoona’s Titus Dimitru. Yates limited the damage there in the sixth. He opened the seventh by walking a batter, before generating a ground ball to shortstop Wehiwa Aloy for a double play to end his day. Yates did not strike out a batter but allowed just two runs on four hits and two walks.

The Baysox bookended Dimitru’s two-run single with a pair of solo homers. After five and two-thirds scoreless from Altoona lefty Connor Oliver, Doug Hodo launched a solo home run to left field for his eighth long ball of the season to open the scoring.

In the seventh, Dom Keegan tied the game with an opposite-field shot against Curve reliever Emmanuel Chapman.

The 2-2 score held until the ninth. Victor Figueroa reached on an error to start the frame. Figueroa stole second, and eventually scored on a two-out single from Thomas Sosa against Altoona righty Jaycob Deese (W, 3-3) to put Chesapeake on top, 3-2.

The Curve walked off the game in the bottom of the ninth. After a leadoff single from Altoona, right-hander Alex Pham (L, 0-1) entered. Dimitru stepped up and doubled home the tying run – his third RBI of the night. The Curve loaded the bases on a walk and hit batter and with two outs, the Curve’s Jesus Castillo floated a single into shallow center – just out of the reach of a diving Sosa in center field.

Sunday was the third walk-off defeat for Chesapeake in 2026 and sealed a series split in Altoona on the week.

The Baysox return home on Tuesday, August 4, when they open up a seven-game set with the Harrisburg Senators, the Double-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 6:35 pm ET.
