Baz Tabbed Triple-A East Pitcher of the Week

Durham Bulls right-hander Shane Baz has been named Triple-A East Pitcher of the Week for the time period between June 21-28. He is the first Bulls player to earn a weekly honor from the circuit this season. Over his two starts in that time frame, Baz posted a 1-0 record

Durham Bulls right-hander Shane Baz has been named Triple-A East Pitcher of the Week for the time period between June 21-28. He is the first Bulls player to earn a weekly honor from the circuit this season.

Over his two starts in that time frame, Baz posted a 1-0 record and 0.90 ERA (1 ER/10.0 IP), while striking out 15 of 36 batters faced, adding five hits and two walks. He matched a career-high with ten punchouts over five shutout innings on Sunday, June 27 at Jacksonville.

In three starts with Durham since being promoted from Double-A Montgomery on June 15, the 22-year-old owns a 1-0 record and 1.29 ERA (2 ER/14.0 IP), adding 20 strikeouts compared to just three walks. He has also recorded a 0.86 WHIP and .188 batting average against (9-48).

Baz, who is rated by MLBPipeline as the No. 71 overall prospect in baseball, compiled a 2-4 record and 2.48 ERA (9 ER/32.2 IP) in seven starts with Montgomery prior to his promotion. Overall in ten starts this year between Montgomery and Durham he has accumulated a 3-4 mark and 2.12 ERA (11 ER/46.2 IP), yielding one earned run or less in seven of those 11 outings.

He was acquired by the Rays organization as the player to be named later in a July 31, 2018 trade along with RHP Tyler Glasnow and OF Austin Meadows from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for RHP Chris Archer. Baz was selected by Pittsburgh in the first round as the 12th overall selection in the 2017 draft out of Concordia Lutheran High School in Texas.
