A six-run fifth inning propelled the Biloxi Shuckers (52-39, 11-10 2nd Half) to a 6-2 victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts (44-46, 8-13) on Thursday night at MGM Park. All six runs for the Shuckers came with two outs as Biloxi took the first game of a six-game series.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Corey Ray started the rally with a two-out single to right. Bruce Caldwell followed by tucking a double into the right-field corner, driving in Ray from first to bring Biloxi within a run at 2-1. Patrick Leonard tripled off of RHP Aaron Fossas (L, 4-3) to center, scoring Caldwell to tie the game. After a Dillon Thomas walk, Jake Gatewood bounced a single through the third-base hole, plating Leonard to put Biloxi out in front 3-2. Fossas departed in favor of LHP Ty Boyles, who served up an 0-1 pitch that Cooper Hummel cranked over the left-field wall for a three-run homer, his sixth of the season, to give the Shuckers a 6-2 advantage.
RHP Drew Rasmussen got the start for the Shuckers and delivered three scoreless frames. Rasmussen allowed just two hits on a pair of two-out singles in the third. The righty struck out four as he tossed 43 pitches, 30 for strikes, without walking a batter. LHP Cameron Roegner entered for Biloxi in the fourth and was shaky out of the gate, allowing a run to score on a bases-loaded single and another run to come across on a sacrifice fly. The lefty settled in after the fourth, allowing just two baserunners during the remainder of his four innings on the mound.
In his first appearance since the MLB All-Star Futures Game, RHP Devin Williams hurled two perfect innings, including striking out the side in the ninth. In the second half of the Southern League season, Williams has made six scoreless appearances for Biloxi.
Biloxi and Chattanooga square off in game two of their six-game series on Friday night at MGM Park. The Shuckers will send RHP Alec Bettinger (4-5, 3.49) to the mound against Lookouts LHP Packy Naughton (4-5, 2.98) for a 6:35 pm first pitch. It's Fireworks Friday, with a postgame firework show set to light up the Biloxi skies. The game can be heard locally in Biloxi on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/100.9 FM, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App and can be seen on MiLB.TV.
