The right-hander from the Bronx got the last 12 outs to earn his first save of the year in support of starter AJ Blubaugh. Blubaugh (6-3) gave up one run on three hits over five innings of work.
The Tourists (18-25 in the second half) took the first game of six from Jersey Shore (24-19 in the second half).
Michael Sandle opened the scoring in the third inning with a home run off Jersey Shore starter Michael Plassmeyer.
The BlueClaws tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Caleb Ricketts. Asheville would re-take the lead in the fifth on a SAC fly from Justin Williams.
Plassmeyer started and gave up one run in three innings. Malik Binns threw a scoreless fourth in relief.
Cotto (0-4) took the loss. He allowed one in five innings but retired the last 15 batters he faced.
The teams continue their series on Wednesday night at 7:05 pm. RHP Christian McGowan is scheduled to start for the BlueClaws.
