Coming into his start Saturday night, Michael Shawaryn was averaging more than a strikeout per inning.
And that was before adding a new pitch to his mix.
Working with a cutter for the first time, the No. 12 Red Sox prospect struck out a career-high 12 in six innings to help Class A Greenville top Augusta, 3-2, in 12 innings.

"He had a lot of success with it," Drive pitching coach Walter Miranda said. "He has four pitches now and they are all strikeout pitches. He will get swings and misses with all four of them. There's not many pitchers who have four strikout pitches, so he's got the whole package to be a Major League starter."
Shawaryn, who gave up a run on three hits, started the game by issuing the only walk he would allow to Ashford Fulmer. The right-hander then retired the next three batters, striking out two of them.

"He got squeezed a little to start the game and we had some light rain. That's not an excuse but as soon as he went into the stretch, he got back to it and got out of the inning," Miranda explained.
After working around a two-out single by Jacob Heyward in the second, Shawaryn began to roll. The University of Maryland product struck out five of six batters while retiring the side in order in the third and fourth.
"Everything was working today," Miranda said. "He got into a rhythm and we just let him pitch. He was working on both sides of the plate and his fastball command was really good."

Shawaryn made his only mistake with one out in the fifth against Heyward, who deposited a pitch over the left-center field wall for a solo homer.
The 21-year-old quickly shook off the long ball and struck out the next two GreenJackets on seven pitches.
"It was a slider that he slowed down a little bit," Miranda said of the 2016 fifth-round pick. "But that's something he used to motivate himself. He didn't quit and learned from his mistake and made better pitches without letting that home run throw off his approach."
In his first full season, Shawaryn has a 3.99 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 29 1/3 innings. His 44 strikeouts are second in the South Atlantic League, trailing only Pirates No. 14 prospectLuis Escobar, who has 46 for West Virginia.
"He's getting better every outing. He's made improvements every start and he's a smart kid so when he needs to make an adjustment he does," Miranda said of Shawaryn. "His mechanics have been more compact and under control. His tempo was good today, he started to work a little quicker and that helped him stay in rhythm."

The GreenJackets took a 2-1 lead in the 11th on a solo homer by Frandy De La Rosa. But Red Sox No. 4 prospect Bobby Dalbec answered with a solo shot in the bottom of the inning before Chris Madera delivered a walk-off single in the 12th.
Caleb Baragar gave up a run and three hits with a career-high nine strikeouts over six innings for Augusta.
