Arkansas Travelers catcher Boston Smith was honored as the Texas League Player of the Week for August 3-9 it was announced today by Minor League Baseball. In his first week with Arkansas, Smith went 8-21 (.380) and slugged five home runs while driving in nine runs. He compiled a slugging percentage of 1.095. He went deep in three consecutive games from Wednesday - Friday and then capped the week with a two homer game on Sunday.
Smith was acquired by the Mariners from the White Sox organization in a trade on August 1. This past week with Arkansas was his first week in the Mariners system. He had previously been with Double-A Birmingham in the Southern League. For the season over three levels and with four clubs, Smith is hitting .297/.450/.626 with 27 homers, 67 RBI and 77 walks in 85 games. At the Double-A level, those numbers rise to .323/.479/.763 with 13 HR, 27 RBI and 26 walks in 29 games. The 23-year old was drafted in the 6th round last year by the Washington Nationals out of Wright State. He has been traded twice in his pro career. He is a native of Arcanum, Ohio.
The award for Smith marks the tenth time a Trav has earned a TL weekly honor this season. Kade Anderson is a five-time award winner this season and other previous awards have gone to LHP Nico Tellache, INF Caleb Cali, RHP Ryan Sloan and OF Lazaro Montes.
The Travs are on the road this week but return home to CHI St. Vincent Field at Dickey-Stephens Park for a six game series running from August 16-23 against the Springfield Cardinals.
