BURLINGTON, IA - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (17-11) won their seventh game in a row with a 15-13 10 inning win tonight at Community Field over the Burlington Bees (12-14). It secures the fifth consecutive series win for the Hot Rods as well.
Things got started for Bowling Green in the second, when SS Zach Rutherford tripled, and 1B Devin Davis followed with a double, his fourth straight double dating back to Sunday.
Burlington sent eight hitters to the plate in the bottom of the second and took a 4-1 lead to the third. The lead swelled to 5-1 on a home run for the Bees in the third.
The Hot Rods flipped the script in the fifth, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring five runs, tying the most they've scored in an inning this year. The inning was highlighted by a three run double off the bat of DH Brendan McKay and an RBI single from CF Emilio Gustave . The visitors led 6-5.
After the Bees scored a run in the sixth to tie the game, the Hot Rods retook the lead in the seventh, 7-6.
Bowling Green exploded for five more runs in the eighth, with Gustave mashing a three run home run to left, his first home run since Opening Day, and McKay hitting his first home run of the year to right, a two-run shot, that gave the Hot Rods a 12-6 lead.
Unfortunately for the Hot Rods, it didn't hold. The Bees scored five runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth, and then tied it in the ninth, sending the game to extras for the second consecutive night.
In the 10th, the Hot Rods scored three runs, and the big blow came from RF Eleardo Cabrera , who hit a two run single, and it made the score 15-12.
C Mac Seibert came on in the 10th inning to try and earn the save and he allowed a run, stranding the tying run on first base, to lock down a wild 15-13 win for Bowling Green.
Hot Rods pitchers tied a franchise mark with 12 walks tonight, and the defense committed six errors, one shy of the franchise mark. The Hot Rods have committed 11 errors in the two games at Community Field.
The Hot Rods will look to sweep the road trip tomorrow when LHP Josh Fleming (0-0, NR) will make his Bowling Green debut. He will be opposed by RHP Jeremy Beasley (0-1, 2.57) for Burlington. First pitch is set for 2:00pm.
