Braves sink Barons on cold, rainy night

BIRMINGHAM, AL -- The Braves and Barons got underway at Regions Field after an 11 minute rain delay to start the game. The two teams were interrupted again the the third but resumed play after a 30-minute delay. Amidst a rainy night and temperatures in the 50's, Mississippi (14-14) battled through the two delays and claimed a 4-2 win over the Birmingham Barons (10-18) with solid pitching and clutch hitting.
Jared James led the M-Braves offensively, going 4-for-4 at the plate with a triple and three RBI. Kade Scivicque added a 2-for-4 performance. He doubled twice and scored twice.
The Braves scored first in the top of the third inning when Scivicque hit the first pitch after resuming play into right field for a double. Scivicque took third on the single to right by James. The right fielder, Nick Basto mishandled the ball, and alertly, Scivicque scored on the error to put the Braves up 1-0.
Mississippi added a run in the seventh after Connor Lien reached on a throwing error by the catcher, Brett Austin, on a dropped third strike. Lien then scored on a Jared James triple to right-center field, giving Mississippi a 2-0 lead.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Keon Barnum doubled to left center field. Austin then doubled to right, scoring Barnum. He took third on a passed ball and then scored on the infield single from Jeff Gelalich, tying the game at 2-2.
In the top of the ninth with one out, Carlos Franco singled to left-center and Scivicque doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third. James then delivered a two-run single to provide the winning margin of 4-2 for the Braves.
Matt Withrow was solid in the start for the Braves. He worked five innings of one hit, shutout baseball, but did not factor in the decision. He walked four while striking out seven Barons hitters. Jesse Biddle came on in relief and was charged with a blown save, allowing two runs (one earned) in two innings. He gave up three hits and struck out two. Bradley Roney (1-0) picked up his first win of the season as he threw the final two frames, walking three and striking out three.
Mississippi and Birmingham play game four of the series Saturday at 6:30 PM. The Braves send LHP Max Fried (1-3, 6.23) to the hill against Barons RHP Spencer Adams (1-4, 2.93).
