Highly-touted Red Sox pitching prospect, and Drive alumnus, Brayan Bello made his Major League debut Wednesday night, taking the hill for the Sox versus the Tampa Bay Rays. In doing so, the 23-year-old right-handed hurler became the 101st Drive Alum to go "From the South to the Show"!
The outcome of Wednesday's performance wasn't desirable, as Bello surrendered four earned runs on six hits and three walks, while only striking out two over four innings. While it was most likely a spot start, as Chris Sale is expected to return to the club from the Injured List next week, there could be a bullpen role for Bello during the remainder of the 2022 season.
Ranked as the #3 prospect in Boston's farm system, Bello made 25 starts in Greenville during the 2019 season and six more starts in 2021. The post-COVID campaign was a breakout year for Bello, as he twirled a perfect 5-0 record and a 2.27 ERA, while striking out 45 in only 31-2/3 innings of work for the Drive. That performance earned him a much deserved promotion to Double-A Portland.
This season was just as magical for Bello, returning to Portland to begin the season. He as 4-2 with a 1.60 ERA, including tossing a 7-inning complete game no-hitter on May 5th in the second game of the Sea Dogs twinbill versus Reading. He would make one more start for Portland before a promotion to Triple-A Worcester.
Heading into his big league debut Wednesday, Bello had made nine appearances (eight starts) for he Woo Sox, compiling a 6-2 record, 2.81 ERA, and 72 strikeouts over 51-1/3 innings.
