NASHVILLE (June 16, 2026) - While uncommon for a long time, seeing minor league prospects receive contract extensions that tie them to a big-league franchise before even making their Major League Debut has become more familiar in the last few years. The Nashville Sounds parent club, Milwaukee Brewers, have led the charge in recent seasons. Outfielder Jackson Chourio received an 8-year, $82 million deal in December of 2023; the largest guaranteed contract ever given to a player before making their big-league debut at the time. Earlier this season, Infielder Cooper Pratt, Milwaukee’s no. 4-rated prospect, signed an 8-year, $50 million deal that inked him to the Brewers through the 2033 season with club options in 2034 and 2035. Pratt had played just three Triple-A games at the time of his extension. On June 9, Brewers’ no. 5-rated prospect Luis Lara became the most recent to seemingly cement himself as part of the Brewers’ long-term vision and plans in Milwaukee.

Lara, 21, signed a 7-year, $31 million extension through 2032 with club options in 2033-35. He entered 2026 as the fourth-youngest player in the International League, and the sixth youngest in all Triple-A which made his torrid start to the season all that more impressive. He spent all of 2025 with Double-A Biloxi and played in a career-high 136 games for the Shuckers. Lara belted a home run in his Triple-A debut on the road in Norfolk on March 27 and added a second home run on April 1 vs. Charlotte to match his entire home run output from 2025 through his first five Triple-A games. Through his first 26 games with Nashville, he set a single-season career-high with five home runs after combining for six home runs in 146 games between High-A Wisconsin and Biloxi from 2024-2025 and hitting just 10 career home runs through his first 468 games since making his professional debut in 2022.

He wasn’t just hitting for power though; He recorded back-to-back three-hit games on April 14-15, his fourth and fifth three-hit performances through his first 15 games of the season. Though he produced eight 3+ hit games for Biloxi in 2025, he didn’t record his first until May 24. Pretty much a year later, Lara already had nine three-hit games and carried a .342 AVG and .450 OBP through 50 Triple-A games.

Despite no Sounds players having been awarded weekly or monthly International League honors this season, Lara earned recognition by being named Sounds Player of the Month in back-to-back months for April and May. He led the team in a handful of offensive categories in the first full month of the season, including hitting team-best .326 AVG and leading the team in hits, total bases (47), stolen bases (10), and runs scored (23). He finished the month second in the International League in runs, was tied for third in stolen bases, ranked seventh in hits, and ninth in total bases. He had a hit in 17-of-25 games for the month and produced multi-hit performances eight times.

The Venezuelan native followed that up by hitting .370 across 26 games in the month of May with a .991 OPS. He had a hit in 19-of-26 games, including 10 multi-hit games while also drawing 22 walks and adding 14 RBI for the month. Five of his 10 total three-hit games this season came during the month of May. He ended the month with the third-best AVG in the International League; fifth-overall in Triple-A. His .491 OBP ranked third in the IL; fourth in Triple-A. He also finished the month ranked fifth in hits in the IL and tied for seventh in Triple-A and was fifth in Triple-A in walks for the month. His .491 OBP was 10th best across all of Minor League Baseball. Among qualified Nashville teammates, the next best AVG on the team was Eddys Leonard (.267); Jett Willaims had the second-best OBP (.375); Leonard also carried the second-best OPS (.827).

As we close in on the end of the first half of the International League schedule, Lara ranks second in Triple-A in OBP (.443), fifth in walks (45), tied for fifth in runs (53), eighth in AVG (.329), and tied for eighth in hits (74) through 62 games. He missed five straight games while working through finalizing his contract extension before returning to the Sounds lineup on June 9 when the deal was announced. His 20 multi-hit games currently lead all Nashville players. His breakout season includes four different hitting streaks of 5+ games, going a season-long seven straight games from April 9-16 and has produced two different on-base streaks of 10+ games. He enters the final series of the first half riding a 16-game on-base streak from May 22-June 14. After going 3-for-4 on May 26 vs. Gwinnett, Lara had recorded his 10th three-hit game of the season. At the time he was responsible for 45% of Nashville’s 3+ hit games in 2026 with nobody on the roster currently having more than three; Eddys Leonard collected his third of the season in Nashville’s series finale against Durham on June 14. Lara had more three-hit games than anyone in Triple-A when he had his last. He entered the season with 23 total games with 3+ hit games in his first five years as a pro.

Since 2022, Lara leads the Brewers’ farm system in hits (460), runs (304), and stolen bases (146). He ranks second in doubles (83), third in total bases (613), and tied for third in triples (14). He ranks fourth in walks (237) and has posted the sixth-most XBH (114) in the organization. Now holding a 40-man roster spot, Lara seems poised to make his Major League debut sooner rather than later and join fellow Sounds Jeferson Quero and Cooper Pratt as position players to make their MLB debut with Milwaukee in 2026.
