Brogdon Aides In Sweep

Williamsport, PA -- Connor Brogdon continued a series of solid pitching as he helped the Crosscutters to a 6-4 win over the Auburn Doubledays, completing the series sweep.

Williamsport, PA -- Connor Brogdon continued a series of solid pitching as he helped the Crosscutters to a 6-4 win over the Auburn Doubledays, completing the series sweep.

After a triple from Rodolfo Duran, the Crosscutters were able to get an early lead thanks to a sacrifice fly from Jesus Azuaje to score Duran in the bottom of the 3rd inning, giving Williamsport a 1-0 lead. It was the 1st RBI of the season for Azuaje.
Will Stewart was looking for a bounce back start against the Doubledays, and was able to keep Auburn off the scoreboard through the first three innings of the game despite battling his command.
Auburn was able to get to Stewart in the top of the 4th inning, getting their first run on a RBI double from Jeyner Baez to plate Andres Martinez, tying the game at 1-1.
With Baez on 3rd base, Stewart bounced one to the backstop, allowing Baez to score to give the Doubledays their first lead of the evening at 2-1. Stewart was able to get out of the inning with the same score.
Jake Scheiner got the run back in the bottom of the 4th inning, singling off the glove of the pitcher Nick Raquet to score Yahir Gurrola and tie the game at 2-2. It was the 13th RBI of the season for Scheiner.
In the top of the 5th, the Doubledays were able to retake the lead against Stewart, taking advantage of a two-out walk to Chance Shepard that extended the inning. Omar Meregildo connected on his 8th home run of the season, giving the Auburn a 4-2 lead.
It was the third home run allowed by Stewart this season.
Connor Brogdon replaced Stewart in the top of the 6th inning, after Stewart allowed four runs, all earned, on six hits and four walks while striking out six.
Brogdon struck out the side in the top of the 6th inning and then struck out two more in the top of the 7th.
Williamsport's offense came to life again in the bottom of the 7th inning against the Auburn bullpen.
Cole Stobbe lead off the inning with a triple off the base of the right field wall for his first triple of the season. Josh Stephen plated Stobbe with an RBI infield single off the glove of pitcher Jared Brasher to bring the Cutters within one at 4-3. It was Stephen's 25th RBI of the season.
Rodolfo Duran followed with a double to left, scoring Stephen to tie the game at 4-4, giving Duran his 6th RBI of the year.
Luis Encarnacion grounded up the 1st base line with Duran at 3rd, Duran broke towards the plate and beat the wide throw to give the Cutters a 5-4 lead and gave Encarnacion his 4th RBI of the season.
In the top of the 8th inning, Brogdon was able to work around a pair of singles, using the second caught stealing of the night by Rodolfo Duran to work his third scoreless inning of relief.
The Cutters were able to get an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th inning thanks to a bases loaded RBI ground out from Azuaje to score Stobbe from 3rd to give Williamsport a 6-4 lead and give Azuaje his 2nd RBI.
Luis Ramirez entered the ballgame in the top of the 9th inning, relieving Brogdon who finished the night having tossed three shutout innings, scattering three hits and a walk while striking out five en route to his 2nd win of the season.
Ramirez allowed a lead off single in the top of the 9th and then allowed a one out single to see the Doubledays get the tying runner aboard for Chance Shepard.
The Cutters closer was able to get Shepard to ground into a game-ending 6-3 double play to give the Cutters the win, giving Ramirez his New York-Penn League leading 10th save of the season.
The Crosscutters start a three-game series against the Spikes in State College tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. At Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Cutter Carvings - The sweep was the first of the season for the Crosscutters since sweeping the Batavia Muckdogs on July 21-23... It was the first home series sweep since sweeping the Lowell Spinner on July 14-16... Luis Ramirez earned his 10th save. Rob Tasin set the franchise mark with 17 saves in 2015... The Cutters are 7-7 against the Doubledays with four more meetings left... Malvin Matos had his 22-game on-base streak snapped, going 0-2 before being removed form the game in the top of the 4th...
