Burrows Fans Seven As Sugar Land Drops 11-5 Decision

Ferreras, Spence, Biggio Each Homer In Loss

RHP Mike Burrows recorded his highest strikeout total on his Major League rehab assignment, but the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (34-19, 66-61) dropped an 11-5 decision to the Las Vegas Aviators (29-24, 73-53) on Wednesday night at Las Vegas Ballpark.

Burrows began his night by retiring the first two batters in the last of the first, but a two-out infield single brought up Joey Meneses, who hit a two-run home run to left field to give Las Vegas an early 2-0 lead.

Burrows bounced back to face the minimum in the second inning before striking out the side in the third and throwing a scoreless fourth to record three straight innings without allowing a run.

Sugar Land rallied to tie the game in the top of the fourth. César Salazar led off with his fifth double of the season and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Pascanel Ferreras grounded out to drive him home and cut the deficit to 2-1. Matt Thaiss then doubled before Lucas Spence delivered an RBI single to score Thaiss and even the game at 2-2.

Las Vegas regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Jonathan Rodriguez led off with a solo home run to center field. The Aviators then loaded the bases with three consecutive walks before a double and a single plated four more runs, giving Las Vegas a 7-2 advantage after a five-run inning.

Ferreras helped spark a comeback in the top of the sixth when he led off with a home run deep to left field on the first pitch of the frame before Spence bombed a solo shot of his own to center field with two outs, cutting the deficit to 7-4. However, Las Vegas used a two-out grand slam to score four more in the bottom of the sixth and open up an 11-4 lead.

LHP Bryan King appeared in the bottom of the eighth and threw a perfect inning, striking out the first two batters he faced before forcing a groundout to retire the side and give the Space Cowboys one last opportunity.

Sugar Land trimmed the deficit in the top of the ninth when Cavan Biggio smashed a home run deep to right field, making it 11-5. Zach Dezenzo followed with a walk to put another runner on base, but Salazar flied out to the wall in right field to end the game.

NOTABLE:

RHP Mike Burrows made his third major league rehab appearance with Sugar Land on Wednesday night and tossed 4.1 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs while walking two and striking out seven. His seven strikeouts marked a high with Sugar Land on his Major League rehab assignment and was his first game with at least seven strikeouts since April 25, when he struck out seven against the New York Yankees while with Houston.
Lucas Spence went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored on Wednesday night. His home run was his second with Sugar Land and his first since June 27 against El Paso. Spence’s multi-hit performance marked his fifth with the Space Cowboys this season.
Pascanel Ferreras went 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and a walk on Wednesday night. His home run was his fourth with Sugar Land and his first in a road ballpark since June 7 at El Paso.
Matt Thaiss went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored on Wednesday night. His multi-hit performance was his second since making his Space Cowboys debut on July 25. Both of his multi-hit games have featured two doubles, with his first coming on July 31 against Salt Lake when he went 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored.
Cavan Biggio went 1-for-3 with a home run and a walk on Wednesday night, extending his streak to six consecutive games with a walk. Biggio has drawn four walks through the first two games of the series, tying fellow Space Cowboy Zach Dezenzo and Diego Velasquez of Sacramento for the most walks in the Pacific Coast League this week.

Sugar Land continues their six-game set in Vegas on Thursday night as RHP Ronel Blanco will start for the Space Cowboys, while the Aviators will counter with RHP Matt Sauer.
