Against the Hartford Yard Goats in Game 2 of Friday’s doubleheader, Smith tossed 6.0 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. Facing two over the minimum, Smith allowed one walk and surrendered Hartford’s lone hit, earning the victory in Somerset’s 6-0 one-hit shutout win.
Smith’s outing marked his second consecutive quality start and sixth overall this season, which are tied for second-most in the Eastern League. Over his last two games, the Yankees No. 21 prospect has allowed one earned run in 13.0 IP (0.69 ERA) alongside a 2-0 record, 0.38 WHIP and .075 BAA with 13 K to 2 BB. Smith leads all MiLB starting pitchers with over 10 IP in WHIP and BAA in that span.
In 21 games (20 GS) with Somerset this season, Smith has registered a 7-7 record and 4.80 ERA (ninth in EL) with 98 K (ninth in EL) to 44 BB in 105.0 IP.
Selected in the sixth round, 192nd overall by the New York Yankees in the 2023 MLB Draft out of Mississippi State, Smith is in his third professional season and first at Double-A. Across his entire pro career, he’s posted a 15-15 record, 3.97 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and .220 BAA in 238.1 IP across 53 games (50 GS).
This is Smith’s second MiLB in-season award after winning FSL Pitcher of the Month honors (July 2024) with the Tampa Tarpons in his first pro season. He joins OF Jace Avina (5/12-5/18, 5/26-5/31), INF Coby Morales (4/20-4/26), LHP Xavier Rivas (6/16-6/21) and OF DJ Gladney (7/21-7/26) as the fifth individual Patriot to be selected for a weekly award this season. Avina was also named Player of the Month for May.
