'Caps Split in Beloit

BELOIT, WI - The 'Caps had a little catching up to do in a split of a doubleheader with the Beloit Snappers, earning a 6-3 win before dropping a 2-0 decision in the nightcap Thursday night at Pohlman Field.
In Game 1, a six-run fourth inning helped the 'Caps build a lead they would never relinquish. A two-run single by Zac Shepherd helped the 'Caps break a scoreless tie. Run-scoring singles by Chad Sedio and Anthony Pereira in the frame also contributed to the big inning. The Snappers scored a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth, but came no closer, as the 'Caps bullpen pitched in to cover six innings of solid work to coast to a 6-3 victory.
In the nightcap, Matt Milburn tossed 5.2 scoreless innings, holding the Whitecaps to just three hits as part of the 2-0 win. The game featured significant issues with the outfield light towers, as a high number of inoperable light bulbs made playing conditions less-than-ideal, and led to multiple issues during the contest. Miguel Mercedes' run-scoring double helped the Snappers score their only runs of the night in the fourth inning.
Trent Szkutnik (5-1) earned his fifth win in the first game, while Alfred Gutierrez (7-5) dropped his fifth decision of the season in the nightcap. Eduardo Jiménez pitched the ninth inning of game one to earn his sixth save of the season. West Michigan's record moves to 64-29 in 2017. With the split, Beloit's record moves to 14-13 in the second half, and 46-50 overall.
