Eastlake, Ohio—Lake County’s Jose Pirela belted a tie-breaking two-run home run in the seventh inning to lift the Captains to a 4-2 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Wednesday afternoon. The Captains have won the first two games of the seven-game series.
Recap: Lake County started the scoring with a single run in the second inning before the Dragons grabbed the lead in the fourth. Dayton’s Tyson Lewis opened the fourth inning with a single to center field and stole second. John Michael Faile followed with a home run to right field, his eighth of the season, to give the Dragons a 2-1 lead. The homer was Faile’s sixth in his last 15 games and his 25th in his tenure with the Dragons, just five off the club record for career home runs in a Dayton uniform.
Dragons starting pitcher Stharlin Torres had one bad inning when he issued three walks including one with the bases loaded, but he bounced back to give the club a good outing. Torres worked five innings, allowing one run on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts. He left the game with a 2-1 lead.
Reliever Jordan Little replaced Torres in the sixth. The Captains had runners at first and third with two outs when Little committed a balk to bring in the tying run, evening the score at 2-2.
In the seventh, Little walked the first batter he faced and then surrendered a two-run home run to Jose Pirela that gave Lake County a 4-2 lead.
The Dragons had a chance for a comeback in the ninth inning. Ryan McCrystal and Ty Doucette both drew walks to start the inning, putting the tying runs on base with no outs. But Mason Neville struck out looking, and Esmith Pineda grounded into a game-ending double play to close out the afternoon.
The Dragons finished with six hits. Lewis was 3 for 4 with three singles and two stolen bases.
