Peoria, IL – The St. Louis Cardinals announced Tuesday that pitcher Drew VerHagen will begin a rehab assignment in Peoria on Wednesday when the Chiefs host the Beloit Sky Carp.
VerHagen, a reliever, is anticipated to pitch at some point in Wednesday’s game with the option to appear in a second game later this week.
The 31-year-old was signed by the Cardinals on March 11 and is 3-1 with a 6.30 ERA this season. VerHagen is recovering from a right shoulder impingement and has not pitched since June 23 at Milwaukee.
The right-hander spent 2020 and 2021 in Japan pitching for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters of the Nippon Professional Baseball League. Perhaps his best professional season came in 2015 when he went 2-0 with a 2.05 in 20 appearances with the Detroit Tigers.
VerHagen becomes the first Cardinals rehabber to spend time with the Chiefs since August 14, 2021, when Miles Mikolas started for Peoria in a win over Cedar Rapids.
