BRISTOL, TN - The Johnson City Cardinals were defeated by the Bristol Pirates on Thursday 6-3 to even the series at one-game apiece. The Cardinals drop to 7-8 on the season, but are only 1.5 games out of first place.
Kyle Leahy got his first start of the season after making three relief appearances earlier this season. Leahy pitched 4.1 innings, allowing six hits, one earned run and one walk. Leahy did not get a decision in the game, but he lowered his ERA to 1.46.
The Pirates got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with one in the bottom of the first. The Cardinals did answer back in the second and third innings. After Donivan Williams grounded into a 5-4 double play that allowed him to reach first, Michael Perri then singled to move Williams to second. Benito Santiago reached on a fielding error which allowed Williams to score to tie the game 1-1.
In the top of the third, Jonatan Machado led off with a walk and then stole second with one out. Kevin Woodall doubled in Machado to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. The Cardinals would hold their 2-1 lead until Bristol put up runs in the sixth, seventh, and both teams would score in the eighth inning.
The Cardinals lone run in the eighth, was a Nolan Gorman solo homerun, his team leading sixth of the season to make the score 5-2. Bristol scored one in the bottom of the eighth and that's where it would stay, 6-3.
After Kyle Leahy went 4.1 innings, he was replaced by Enrique Perez who pitched 0.2 innings, gave up two earned runs, two walks, and took the loss which was his first of the season.
Tommy Parsons replaced Perez, he pitched two innings, three hits, two earned runs, three strikeouts, and a homerun but also blew his first save of the season.
Juan Alvarez was the last pitcher used by the Cardinals. Alvarez went one inning, gave up two hits, one earned run and had three strikeouts.
The Cardinals return home on Saturday for a seven game homestand, three against the Pulaski Yankees, and then four against the Elizabethton Twins.
