KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The Carolina defense turned three double plays, reliever Jeferson Figueroa tossed three scoreless innings and Tayden Hall extended his hit streak to nine straight games, but the first-place Mudcats were shut out 3-0 by the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers on Saturday night at Atrium Health Ballpark.
Logan Henderson started and worked through the fifth with five strikeouts. Henderson (L, 3-3) also allowed all three runs while suffering his first loss since June 20. Henderson also walked four and allowed five hits in the loss.
The Cannon Ballers (23-24, 58-54) scored twice in the fourth and once more in the fifth while handing the Mudcats (29-18, 62-48) their eighth shutout loss of the season. The victory also moved Kannapolis into a 3-2 lead in the six-game series.
The two run fourth included a Mario Camilletti sac fly as well as a Calvin Harris RBI single. Jacob Gonzalez then brought the Cannon Ballers into their 3-0 lead with a solo home run in the fifth.
The Mudcats managed just three hits in the loss with Tayden Hall, Jose Sibrian and Jace Avina all hitting safely. Hall singled to start the fourth and extended his hitting streak to nine straight games. Avina later doubled in the ninth to run his streak to six straight.
The loss, combined with a Lynchburg Hillcats victory in Fayetteville, cut Carolina’s lead in the Carolina League North second half standings to 3.0 with 22 games remaining this season.
